HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/28/2005 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, March 28, 2005 College Station Teen Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 10:00am Minutes Members Present: Patricia Boughton, Frank Camplone, Laura Holmes, Robert Meyer, Raymond Reed, Colleen Risinger, Dipankar Sen, Yvonne Stevens, Betty Wilborn and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: E.E. Burns, Joe LeCour, Haskell Monroe and Neal Nutall Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I. Call to order. The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Robert Meyer at 10:04am II. Hear visitors. No visitors III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on February 28, 2005. Ray Reed made the motion that the minutes be approved. Frank Camplone seconded the motion. The motion passed. IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action in development of position statement for senior center. Robert Meyer distributed a draft letter to City Council expressing the desire of the Senior Advisory Committee to build a senior center. After much discussion and some revisions to the letter, Ray Reed made the motion that Chairman, Robert Meyer present a proposal letter to the Parks and Recreation Board and then to City Council expressing the desires of the committee for a stand alone Senior Center facility. Colleen Risinger seconded the motion. The motion passed. The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board is Tuesday, April 12th at 7:00pm. Marci Rodgers will contact Steve Beachy to have the Senior Advisory Committee Chairman, Robert Meyer placed on the agenda. Population figures for seniors will also be researched for the committee. V. Sub-Committee reports: • Goals committee- Joanna Yeager -No report • Program committee—Yvonne Stevens—No report VI. Senior Services Coordinator Report (see attached) VII. Next meeting and agenda items: Monday,April 25, 2005 VIII. Adjourn The committee adjourned at 11:35pm Senior Services Coordinator Report March 2005 March 30 Exploring History Lunch/Lecture The lunch/lecture will be held and the College Station Conference Center from 11:30am-1:00pm. A panel of A&M professors and faculty will speak on the International Program for Students and Faculty. Please make a reservation by calling 764-6262. Senior Advisory Committee members are needed to serve as greeters and to welcome visitors at the sign-in table. April 7 Singing with Seniors Headstart children from South Knoll will sing for the residents at Lulac Oakhill located at 1500 Anderson in College Station. The program begins at 10:00am. Visitors are welcome. April 13 & 27 Computer Club for Seniors The group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 9:00am-10:30am. On April 13th the club meets at the College Station Utilities Service Center Training Room located at 1601 Graham Rd. The speaker is Robert Carroll and the topic is: "When is it necessary to update your computer?" On April 27th the meeting will be held at the Center for Regional Services located at 3991 East 29th street in Bryan for a"hands on" computer class. The speaker is Dale Schafer and the topic is "Internet Searches". April 14 George Bush Library Classic Film, Little Women The George Bush Library and Bush Library Foundation present the Classic Film Series free of charge. The film begins at 7:00pm. College Station Senior Services will provide free transportation to the George Bush Presidential Library for seniors at designated locations with a reservation. Bus seating is limited. April 14- June 2 College Station Senior Police and Fire Academy. The academy is designed just for seniors and topics include the history of the two departments, crimes against the elderly, fire/fall prevention,traffic law and enforcement, emergency and home disaster preparedness,personal safety at home and on the road, heartsaver/CPR and a graduation party! Applications are now being accepted. The academy will meet every Thursday from 9:00am-11:30am at the College Station Teen Center. Contact Cindy Giedratis at 764-3712 for more information and to obtain an application.No cost to register. April 19-May 24 Learn to play 42-Dominoes Seniors are meeting at the College Station Teen Center to learn to play the simple,but challenging, domino game of 42. Enjoy this introductory class and develop your skills in one of the oldest and most popular games among Texans. The class meets on Tuesdays from 9:30am-11:30am. Please register for the class at the College Station Parks and Recreation Department located in Central Park, 1000 Krenek Tap Road. The cost of the class is $25.00. April 20 Exploring History Lunch/Lecture The City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee and Senior Advisory Committee host lunch lectures each month. Lunch is complimentary to those who RSVP and the event is open to the public. The Lunch Lectures are scheduled at the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Dr. from 11:30am-1:00pm. The speaker for April 20th is Rosemary Boykin who will be speaking on the history of local Italian families. Pam Springfield-parkway park Page 1 From: Joan Etter<joanetter@yahoo.com> To: "Pete (Parkway Park)Vanecek" <Pvanecek@cstx.gov> Date: 4/3/2005 3:49:34 PM Subject: parkway park pete, i have been noticing the development of your ideas and the quick positive response to all of it. this work has already proved itself as a very good thing, and it all will be gorgeous once all of the leaves come out. the park is beautiful with all of the new plantings of trees, crepe myrtles, and wax myrtles, as well as the 2 lamps, benches, and sidewalk. oh yes, the water fountain with the foot-handwashing/animal drinking basin as well. thank you so much for the work of doing this. i wanted to report that many people have already used the benches for sitting while their children play or for chatting and the sidewalk for baby strollers, walking dogs, and just today a group of 5 young girls with their bicycles that they could zip downhill and across the bridge. a fun thing, nothing dangerous. having the sidewalk seems to have opened this park up to people on both sides of marstellar and elsewhere who before perhaps wouldn't walk to the other side because they would need to go all the way around the creek for fear that the ground might be soggy. and i have realized just this weekend while seeing children there that children whose parents might not let them come because it might be muddy can now come and have lots of space for sitting and walking on the ground and keeping dry. about the neighborhood picnic: bringing a yard chair could be helpful, if someone wants to sit or if the ground is soggy wet. thanks again, pete.
