MEMORANDUM
TO: Parks and Recreation Board

SUBJECT: ITEMS OF INTEREST
1. New Board Member Appointed: The City Council appointed Michael
Manson to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in February. He will be
finishing out Peggy Said's term through May of 1996, at which time he can
resubmit his application for another two year term. Mr. Manson has lived in
College Station for eight years and is an Associate Professor at Texas A&M
University. His major interests include Lick Creek Park and other natural
areas in College station.
2. Annual Trout Fishout: This year's fishout event was held February 24-26,
at Adamson Lagoon. A total of 566 residents participated, with a revenue of
$1,819 for the weekend. On Thursday, just prior to the official kick off on
Friday, the physically challenged students from the CSISD Head Start
program participated in their own fishout. There were 111 children and
sponsors that participated. These kids caught approximately 100 fish for
the day.
3. Kids Klub: Swim lessons will be offered to the children in the College Hills
Kids Klub program for $16.00 per lesson. The children will be bussed to
Southwood Pool daily for the lessons. Also, each site will be forming a track
team. Staff is hoping to schedule a "track meet" at A&M Consolidated in
May. Linda Waltman, Recreation Superintendent, will be teaching a
workshop for the coaches at each site.
4. Spring Adult Softball: The 1995 League consists of 180 teams divided into
three divisions; men's women's and coed. Each division is broken down
into five different leagues. The men's division has 7 teams in the A league
which is the most competitive, 5 in the B league, 23 in the Super C league,
43 in the C league, and 41 in the D league. The women's division has 8
teams in the C and D leagues. The coed division has 4 teams in the Super

C league, 14 teams in the C league and 35 teams in the D league. Over 20
teams were either turned away or put on a waiting list after the league
reached its capacity of 180 teams. Regular season play begins March 6,
and will end in mid May. Games are played Monday through Thursday
nights from 6:15-11:15 p.m. on the Central Park softball fields. League
tournaments will be held in mid to late season on the weekend. There will
be a tournament for each league in each division.
5. Girls Fastpitch Softball: A total of 206 girls registered for the spring
season, which will constitute 20 teams. The season will begin February 27,
and run through April 29. All softball games will be played at the Bee Creek
softball fields.
6. TRAPS Promotional Award: The Texas Recreation and Park Society
presented the cities of Bryan and College Station with a Promotional Award
for their Parks and Recreation Departments' outstanding promotional efforts
in the 1994 Games of Texas. This award was presented to Tony Cisneros,
Bryan PARD Director, and Emily Baker, College Station PARD Senior
Secretary, at a special recognition banquet on Thursday, March 9, 1995, in
Arlington, Texas.
