HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/21/2012 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, May 21, 2012 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd MINUTES Members Present: Patricia VanderBoom, Bob Meyer, Ron Silvia, E.E. Burns, Pearl Robertson, Jon Denton, Jerry Markowich, Susan McGrail and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Frank Duchmasclo and Ann Hays Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I.Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am by Joanna Yeager, Chairman II.Hear visitors No visitors present III.Approval of minutes from regular meeting on April 30, 2012 Jon Denton made the motion to approve the minutes. Robert Meyer seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV.Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning program sub- committee report regarding upcoming programs and events th The program sub-committee met on May 8 to discuss the June calendar. Highlights th for June include a new six week Transitions of Life series beginning on June 5. Flexercise class will begin on June 4 and meets twice a week for four weeks. The movie, “Joyful Noise” will be shown on June 21 and the Senior Chic Fashion Show th and luncheon will be held at Southwood Community Center on Wednesday, June 27 from 11:00- 1:30pm. The event is sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care with th fashions by Witt’s End. The committee was also made aware of the June 29 deadline for citizen committee applications. The committee was also asked to make suggestions for movies to be shown this summer at Southwood Community Center.  June 12 - Joint planning meeting with Historic Preservation Committee and Senior Advisory Committee to discuss 2013 speakers and topics Members who would like to attend the joint meeting include: Pearl Robertson, Robert Meyer, Joanna Yeager and Pat VanderBoom. The meeting will be held on th Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 am in the Green Room at Wolf Pen Creek Park. V.Update and discussion regarding Senior Advisory Committee Goals  description of community center on 2008 bond election The committee reviewed the description used on the 2008 bond election for a community center. No action taken. VI.Update on Senior Living Development planned behind Southwood Community Center Marci Rodgers reported that Amy Atkins, Assistant Director for the Parks and Recreation Department, contacted Jesse Durden with Caprock Texas and said that they were still working hard to make the senior apartment project a reality. They are on course, but nothing definitive timewise. The committee would like to be kept updated as new information is available. VII.Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding upcoming programs and events (Senior Services Report attached) Marci Rodgers reported on April attendance figures and highlighted May and June events. New programs starting this month include monthly presentations from the Brazos County Health Department and a free workshop on writing your rd family history. The dance on May 3 was well attended. Seniors Expo will feature 97 information booths, entertainment throughout the day, health screenings and seminars. A grand prize drawing for a trip will take place at 1:45pm. The Expo will be held at the Brazos Center from 9-3pm and admission is free. The city will have a booth at the Expo and volunteers working include: 9-11: Frank Duchmasclo and Joanna Yeager 11-1: Jon Denton 1–3: Robert Meyer VIII.Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting.  Next Meeting Date: Monday, June 30, 2012 IX.Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 10:45 am.
