QW9 CfY *FCIJE: iEJATWs Post Office BOX 9960 1101 Texas Avenue College Station,Texas 77842-9960 (409)764.-3500 MEMORANDUM May 8, 1997 TO: Parks & Recreation Board • FROM: Ai teve Beachy, Director of Parks & Recreation SUBJECT: Items of Interest 1. Wolf Pen Creek -- Because of rain and extremely cool weather we moved the 001)5PELL performance to the Willow Branch Theater. The school system was very gracious to work with us and allow us to perform. Friday night's performance had 160 in attendance, Saturday night's performance had 250 in attendance. Although the performance was sponsored and performed by Brazos Valley TROUPE the City was able to help out with use of our sound equipment for the show. The DAVID ALLAN COB CONCERT was sponsored by a local sorority Delta Zeta. There were many other events going on in town that would draw the 'college crowd' but the girls were happy to have an audience of 1,300. Rain struck again during the JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL but the die-hard jazz and blues fans 'toughed' it out with umbrellas to enjoy the music of Big Apple Trio, Ruthie Foster and Karan Chavis. The Festival was presented in conjunction with the ISMS Children's Fest. Total attendance for the Children's Fest was estimated at 4,000, while the Jazz & Blues Fest attracted approximately 1,000. The Jazz & Blues Fest was free to the public. Weather really hurt the DELBERT MCCLINTON & MARCIA BALL CONCERT. Even though the rain cleared up around 5:00pm the attendance for the event was estimated at 1,100. Those that did attend agreed that this was one of the best performances the Amphitheater had ever hosted. SPRING FEST BATTLE OF THE BANDS was rained out at our facility. The event was sponsored by a local fraternity Phi Beta Lambda and was moved to Club Ozone. The CINCO DE MAYO CONCERT WITH PATSY TORRES was a free event which included Low Riders, Eboni Bailey, Yolanda Gonzales, Balete Folorico Angelica, Patricia Alvarado, Ballet Folkorico Celestia as well as Pasty Tones and her dance troupe. Attendance was 1,370. The JACK() PIERCE CONCERT scheduled for May 7th, was moved to Hurricane Harry's by the promoter for unknown reasons. This may have been due to low advanced ticket sales and the restriction on any concert past 10pm during week nights. Home of Texas A&M University • 2. LEMONTREE PARK DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT Construction is now underway to improve the drainage of the Bee Creek tributary that runs through the north end of Lemontree park. The project consists of straightening and widening the creek channel, installing a series of check dams, and placing erosion control matting along the edges of the creek channel. The improvement is possible due to a $10,000 saving from a previous channel improvement. This project is part of a City wide drainage project and should be complete in about two weeks. 3. PRESCRIBED BURNING PROGRAM FOR LICK CREEK PARK - Robert Hensarling, Parks District Supervisor, has investigated sources for information related to prescribed burning of grasslands to enhance the native grasslands. Dr. Larry White, with the TAMU Agricultural Extension Service in College Station, is interested in working with the City in using Lick Creek Park as a teaching site for this practice. He has a high level of expertise in this area and has instructed courses in this method of grassland management. We have set a meeting with him next month to begin the preliminary planning for this program. Coordination with environmental groups, neighbors, fire departments along with local and state agencies will be required. The training program will be conducted this November or December and the actual burns would be scheduled according to weather conditions. A copy of an article from the March issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine that describes the efforts of the State park system in restoring native prairies is included with your packet. 4. HALLMAN! POOL DEDICATION CEREMONY SET - The official dedication of the marker renaming Southwood Pool in honor of Cindy Hallaran is scheduled for Sunday, May 25th at 2pm. There will be a brief ceremony at the pool and friends, family, Board and Council members and employees will be invited to participate. 5. BRYAN FEDERAL PRISON VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM - The training program for approximately 15 female inmates starts on Tuesday, May 13th. The inmates will be working with our Horticultural crews to receive on-site job skills to help them acquire future employment upon release from the prison. This program will benefit the City by providing enhanced beautification of municipal flower beds and green areas throughout town. There is no cost to the City for these inmates and they do not replace any municipal workers or private contractors. 6. KM FISH - The annual Kid Fish will be held on Saturday, May 17th, from 9am - noon at Central Park. This event is sponsored by numerous public and private agencies, businesses and organizations. It serves as a fund-raiser for the Parks & Wildlife Foundation of Texas.
