Parks and Recreation Departmental Awards were handed out at the annual Christmas Party held on December 21. The department began the current awards program in 1992 when the City of College Station implemented their Customer Service Program. To coincide with the customer service concept, the department created four value awards which include dependability, teamwork, professionalism, and innovation, as well as employee of the year awards for temporary/seasonal staff members. The following employees received awards: Dependability - Jerry Branham and Pete Fitzgerald; Innovation - David Wolff; Teamwork - Amanda Becker; and Professionalism - Pamela Einkauf. Temporary/Seasonal employees of the year include: Teen Center - Gretchen Kasper; Instruction - Jenny Hartsfield; Programs/Special Events - Cathy Capps; Concessions - Shannon Braden; Aquatics - Elizabeth Barba; and Parks Operations - Greg Nebgen. The Employee of the Year was awarded to Bridgette George. 2. Christmas in the Park was a big success again this year although there were limited activities on three nights due to adverse weather conditions. A total of 27,250 vehicles entered the park from November 29th through January 1st. With an estimated 3.5 persons per vehicle, approximately 95,375 people visited the park this holiday season. Santa Claus, again, was very popular this year, some individuals waited as long as an hour, just to get in and see him. 3. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will be held at 7 p.m. on January 13th at the Lincoln Center. Guest Speaker will be Audrey Williamson, Lincoln Center Former Student Class of 1952. The Theme is "My Dream, His Dream, Our Dream..." Other activities that evening will include: New Zion B.C. Drill Team performance, local choirs singing, and Natasha Hubbard, College Station Jr. High 8th grader, will recite "I Have a Dream." 'thine of Texas A&M University 4. Christmas Tree Recycling will take place at Central Park on Saturday and Sunday, January 6th and 7th. Citizens have been asked to make sure that their Christmas trees have been stripped of all metal hangers, ornaments, etc. The trees are chipped and turned into mulch, which is then distributed throughout College Station parks. 5. Congratulations to Eric Ploeger CLP, Assistant Director, who recently passed the National Recreation and Parks Association Certified Leisure Professional Examination. The exam was held on October 6, 1995, in San Antonio. Ric was required to master the following topic : Leisure Services Management, Leisure/Recreation Program Delivery, Natural Resource Facilities Management, and Therapeutic Recreation.
