HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/06/2006 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, March 6, 2006 4:00 p.m. 2°d Floor Conference Room City of College Station, City Hall, 1101 Texas Avenue College Station, Texas 77842 MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairperson Hillary Jessup; Committee Members: Marguerite Anthony, Bill Lancaster, Neal Nutall, Colleen Risinger, Tom Taylor and Ernie Wright. MEMBERS ABSENT: Dipankar Sen, Dave Ruesink. STAFF PRESENT: Staff Coordinator Katie Elrod, Heritage Coordinator Anne Boykin,Neighborhood Services Intern Arsenio Rodrigues. VISITORS PRESENT: No visitors present. AGENDA ITEM NO. 1: Call to Order. Chairperson Hillary Jessup called the meeting to order at 4:15p.m. after a brief but respectable birthday celebration was held for Anne Boykin. AGENDA ITEM NO. 2: Consideration, discussion and possible action on absence requests. Dipankar Sen (Absence approved); Dave Ruesink(Absence unapproved). AGENDA ITEM NO. 3: Initial Hear Visitors. No visitors present. Katie Elrod introduced her new Neighborhood Services intern, Arsenio Rodrigues, a Texas A&M graduate student currently working towards a PhD in Architecture. Arsenio will be working on a neighborhood character study while in Neighborhood Services. AGENDA ITEM NO. 4: Consideration, discussion and possible action to approve meeting minutes of regular meeting of January 17, 2006. A motion was made by Tom Taylor to approve the minutes. Motion seconded by Tom Taylor. Motion passed. (7-0). AGENDA ITEM NO. 5: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding the Open Meetings Training. Katie Elrod has scheduled the Open Meetings Training for April 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Planning & Development Services conference room. AGENDA ITEM NO. 6: Report, possible action, and discussion regarding Heritage Preservation Month. Marguerite Anthony and Anne Boykin are working on an event for families and children to be held in the parks on May 20th. An Open House at Project HOLD will also be held that day. AGENDA ITEM NO. 7: Report, possible action, and discussion regarding the reporting of volunteer hours. Anne Boykin reported that Neighborhood Services is now an official certifying organization for volunteer hours through the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, a program of the Points of Light Foundation. Anne asked the members of the HPC to track their hours through this program. AGENDA ITEM NO. 8: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding the committee practices and procedures. Tom Taylor and Marguerite Anthony are working on a set of by-laws for the HPC. A draft was presented to the members. Members were asked to send in their recommendations within a week. Katie Elrod will proof for content. Project Updates: AGENDA ITEM NO. 9: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding the Veterans Park American Mile project. Tom Taylor reported that meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesdays at the College Station Conference Center. The American Mile Committee members have divided up into specific topic groups to submit entries for the timeline. Katie Elrod reported that some of the committee members will be going to Frisco, Texas, to see a similar park project. AGENDA ITEM NO. 10: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding Project HOLD. Anne Boykin reported that she will be including her monthly Project HOLD reports in the HPC packets that are mailed to the Committee every month. Katie Elrod mentioned her continued quest for a Heritage Lunch Bunch that would meet monthly to exchange ideas on heritage preservation. AGENDA ITEM NO. 11: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series. Tom Taylor reported on the tentative schedule for the lunch lecture series. The series will be at 11:30am at the College Station Conference Center on the third Wednesdays of each month except December. Mar. 15 — Cemeteries (Research Ramblers) April 19— Aggie Traditions (A&M Students) May 17— Oil & Gas (Emil Ogden) June 21 — Preacher Tales (Pastor Erskines) July 19— TBA Aug. 16— TBA Sept. 20 — Historic Architecture (David Woodcock) Oct. 18 — TBA Nov. 15 — TBA AGENDA ITEM NO. 12: Calendar of pertinent past and upcoming community events pertaining to historical interests. Past: February 15th Exploring History Lunch Lecture: Folk History Upcoming: March 15th Exploring History Lunch Lecture: Cemeteries March 23rd Bratton Thomason at City Council Workshop Session March 24th Trip to Frisco for American Mile Committee April 7th Open Meetings Act Training April 20th-22nd: Texas Historical Commission Conference The Tremont House, Galveston, Texas May 20th Heritage Month Event AGENDA ITEM NO. 13: Final Hear Visitors. No visitors present. AGENDA ITEM NO. 14: Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. Colleen Risinger .suggested that we continue discussions on the HPC By-Laws at the next meeting. AGENDA ITEM NO. 15: Adjourn. A motion to adjourn was made by Bill Lancaster and seconded by Tom Taylor. (7-0). Meeting was adjourned at 5:40pm.
