HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/06/2006 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, February 6, 2006 4:00 p.m. 2nd Floor Conference Room City of College Station, City Hall, 1101 Texas Avenue College Station, Texas 77842 MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairperson Hillary Jessup; Committee Members: Marguerite Anthony, Bill Lancaster,Neal Nutall, Colleen Risinger, David Ruesink, Dipankar Sen, Tom Taylor and Ernie Wright. MEMBERS ABSENT: No members absent. STAFF PRESENT: Staff Coordinator Katie Elrod, Heritage Coordinator Anne Boykin. VISITORS PRESENT: Chad Bohnie, Texas Department of Transportation AGENDA ITEM NO. 1: Call to Order. Chairperson Hillary Jessup called the meeting to order at 4:15p.m. AGENDA ITEM NO. 2: Consideration, discussion and possible action on absence requests. No members absent.. AGENDA ITEM NO. 3: Initial Hear Visitors. Chad Bohnie announced plans to discuss the grade separated interchange at Wellborn Road and George Bush Drive. AGENDA ITEM NO. 4: Consideration, discussion and possible action to approve meeting minutes of regular meeting of January 17, 2006. Tom Taylor requested a correction in the spelling of his name in Agenda Item No. 8 and Dipankar Sen requested a correction in the calendar section of Agenda Item No. 9. A motion was made by Bill Lancaster to approve the minutes as corrected. Motion seconded by Tom Taylor. Motion passed. (8-0) AGENDA ITEM NO. 5: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding the Veterans Park America's Mile project. Katie Elrod reported that a letter would be going out this week to announce a first meeting of the America's Mile committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at 1:15pm at the College Station Conference Center. Subsequent meetings will be held every two weeks thereafter at the same time and location. AGENDA ITEM NO. 6: Report, possible action, and discussion regarding the committee practices and procedures. Katie Elrod stated that we do need to work on forming by-laws for the HPC. A copy of the Planning and Zoning Commission Rules of Procedure were included in this month's packet for study. Tom Taylor volunteered to work with Katie on the by-laws. AGENDA ITEM NO. 7: Report, possible action, and discussion regarding an update on the Historical Southside Commercial strip and the TxDOT plans for the George Bush & Wellborn area. Mr. Bohnie presented the architectural plans for a grade separated interchange as set forth by the Metropolitan Planning Committee. Texas A&M University, the City of College Station, the City of Bryan and TxDOT are all represented on the committee. The projected start date is 2010 and projected date of completion is 2013. Project Updates: AGENDA ITEM NO. 8: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding Project HOLD. Anne Boykin reported that the oral history interviews are continuing. Volunteer Mary Hamlin and Anne Triche-Steen will be conducting interviews with the African American and Hispanic members of the community. The Brides of the Brazos exhibit at the College Station Conference Center will open on Valentine's Day, February 14th. She also reported that Jerry Cooper, former editor of"The Texas Aggie Magazine," has brought in several Abstracts of Title on his property at 602 Bell Street. AGENDA ITEM NO. 9: Report, discussion, and possible action regarding Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series. Tom Taylor reported on the tentative schedule for the lunch lecture series. The series will be at 11:30am at the College Station Conference Center on the third Wednesdays of each month except December. Feb. 15 — Folk History Mar. 15— Cemeteries (Research Ramblers) April 19— Traditions May 17— Oil & Gas (Emil Ogden) June 21 — Hunstville Prison(Bill Harper) July 19— Historic Architecture(David Woodcock) Aug. 16— Local Churches (Dave Ruesink) Sept. 20— TAMU Football (David Chapman) Oct. 18 — Early Businesses Nov. 15 — Evolution of Brazos Valley Politics AGENDA ITEM NO. 10: Calendar of pertinent past and upcoming community events pertaining to historical interests. Past: January 26th: African American Heritage Banquet Upcoming: February 15th Exploring History Lunch Lecture: Folk History March 15th Exploring History Lunch Lecture: Cemeteries March 23rd Bratten Thomason at City Council Workshop Session April 20th-22nd: Texas Historical Commission Conference The Tremont House, Galveston, Texas AGENDA ITEM NO. 11: Final Hear Visitors. Hillary Jessup thanked Chad Bohnie for coming to the meeting. AGENDA ITEM NO. 12: Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. Hillary Jessup .suggested a possible HPC presence on the City Manager selection committee. Katie Elrod requested that HPC members bring their calendars to the next meeting to schedule the required two hour training session on Open Meetings. AGENDA ITEM NO. 13: Adjourn.
