AGENDA ITEM NO. 6: Presentation by Brazos County Historical
Commission Chair Charles Schultz regarding the Providence Baptist
Church Communtiy project and brief discussion regarding partnering for
commemoration of Texas in WWII on the 60th anniversary of the end of the
war on September 2,2005, as encouraged by the Texas Historical
Commission.
Charles Schultz reported that Providence Missionary Baptist Church was located
at the entrance to Easterwood, where a roadside park used to be. In 1829 John
Henry Jones came to Brazos County as one of the 300 land grant recipients
overseen by Stephen F. Austin's. He had a wife and children. The Providence
Baptish Church was started in 1858 on 2 acres of provided by Jones. The
church functioned until 1930.
Over time his land grant was divided among his descendants. When Jones
Road was improved upon, now called HWY 60, TxDOT bought a 2 acre plot of
land from the Jone's for 1 dollar and a pledge to put up a plaque
commemorating the church at a roadside park at the church site. When HWY 60
was widen again in the 1980's the road side park was absorbed and the marker
no longer displayed. The Texas Historical Commission has asked the TxDOT to
honor their commitment. A couple of years ago TxDOT took interest in the
matter and a memorial is being planned. Students have been asked to design
the memorial and funds have been budgeted for the 2005-2007 budget cycle.
The memorial will consist of two parking spaces, a simulated wood sculpture
fence with metal strips suggesting roads and the Brazos River and local
communities, three pillars containing plaques containing information regarding
the church, and a landscape of roses.
Concerning Texas in WWII, Schultz reported that at the recent Texas Historical
Commission (THC) Conference an emphasis was made on collecting WWII
history. He further reported that the THC was encouraging all Texas Counties to
commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII on VJ day, September
2nd. The HPC and Schultz planned the following meeting dates to plan the
event: Initial Planning Meeting on June 1st at 1:00 p.m. with participants: Schultz,
Taylor, Nutall and staff and June 8th at 1:00 p.m. with plans to invite veteran
organizations and heritage organizations.

appointment. Tom Taylor was recommended. Taylor reported that he would
consider and let staff know at a later time if he would consent to being
recommended.

Taylor, Lancaster, Risinger, and Sanford agreed to serve on the interview panel
for the part-time seasonal staff position of Heritage Volunteer Coordinator at 1:00
p.m. on Thursday, May 12th
AGENDA ITEM NO. 9: Heritage Folks Lunch Bunch.
Staff Katie Elrod reported that discussion was continuing on starting a
mechanism by which individuals involved in heritage projects could meet
together once a month to share progress reports for the purpose of cross
communication. Gayla Christensen of Texas A&M Press, Fran Lamb and Linda
LaSut of the Brazos Heritage Society are in favor of the idea, too.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 10: Northgate Historic Resource Survey.
Staff Elrod reported that Planning Staff had requested that HPC review the
Northgate Historic Surveys completed in 1995 to see if some of the properties
could be downgraded in significance. David Chester and Marsha Sanford had
met previously to view the 1995 survey picture in comparison with current
pictures and determined that the significance ratings in the 1995 report seemed
very low. It was suggested that staff gain current survey methods from the Texas
Historical Commission for preparation for reevaluation. Marsha Sanford said she
would talk to staff to ask for an extension on the assessment.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 11: May Heritage Month.
The May Heritage Month events were reviewed. Members signed up for task at
the Heritage Open House. Chair Sanford reported that she had an interview on

AGENDA ITEM NO. 14: Marker.
Staff Elrod reported that the City wants to make a GIS mapping layer to
represent properties with historic markers. Photographs and property
descriptions would be included in the information by clicking on the property.
Some members discussed that it would be a good idea to make a walking or
driving tour brochure of historic homes and places.
