Historic Preservation Committee
March 9, 2004
CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS
5:30 P.M.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Marsha Sanford, Committee Members Carl Shafer, Bill
Lancaster, Robert McGee, Sherlei Dannhaeuser, and Thomas Taylor.
Arriving at 5:40pm: Committee Member David K. Chester
MEMBERS ABSENT: Committee Members Randal Allison and J.P. Grom
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Assistant Stacey Ann Smith, Staff Planner Kate Elrod, and
Planning Intern Lauren Harrell.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 1: Call to Order.
Chairman Marsha Sanford called the meeting to order at 5:37 PM.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 2: Consideration, discussion and possible action on absence requests.
No absence request was received from J.P. Grom. Committee Member Dannhaeuser made the motion
,to approve the absence of Randal Allison. Committee Member Shafer seconded the motion, which
passed(6-0).
AGENDA ITEM NO. 3: Hear Visitors
No visitors were present.
AGENDA ITEM NO.4: Consideration,discussion and possible action to approve meeting
minutes from January 13,2004.
Committee Member Dannhaeuser made the motion to approve the minutes. Committee Member
Lancaster seconded the motion, which passed(6-0).
AGENDA ITEM NO.5: Report, consideration and possible action on an ad-hoc committee to
address certain neighborhood issues.
Staff Planner Elrod reported that City Council is appointing a committee to study neighborhood issues
over a 3 month time in order to make a recommendation to City Council. Marsha Sanford will
represent the HPC.
AGENDA ITEM NO 6: Committee and staff report of pertinent past and upcoming
community events pertaining to historical interests.
Staff Planner Elrod spoke about Project HOLD at the January 26th Brazos Heritage Society Annual
Meeting.
Che February 13th African American National Heritage Society Banquet was well attended by HPC.

The February 25th Exploring History Lunch Lecture: Black History of College Station went very well
and had a good attendance.
Planning Intern Harrell reported the Annual HRIL Historic Preservation Symposium was interesting,
but more on the technical side. TAMU appreciated HPC's attendance.
Committee Member Dannhaeuser reported on the February 19th Preservation Day.
— Committee Member Dannhaeuser reported on the Cypress Creek Neighborhood Conference.
Staff Planner Elrod reported on the March 4th Texas Historic Commission workshop.
The May 5th College Station Exploring History Lunch Lecture guest speaker will be Rita Portales.
Staff Planner Elrod reported that the upcoming Historic Preservation Conference will be in Fort Worth
on May 6, 7 and 8th. HPC members should consider attending.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 7: Report on College Station Exploring History Series.
Committee Member Dannhaeuser reported the topics and speakers for the Exploring History Lunch
Lectures.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 8: Report on College Hills and Oakwood Neighborhoods grass roots
initiatives to create historic districts.
No report.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 9: Report,consideration,and possible action regarding the Historic
Marker Initiative and the identification of eligible buildings and subjects.
An application on Puryear Street has been submitted for the next meeting.
-- AGENDA ITEM NO. 10: Report, consideration, and possible action regarding the Project
HOLD: Historic Online Library Database.
Staff Planner Elrod reported the Office of Technology and Information Systems is still working on
displaying the document template.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 11: Consideration, discussion and possible action in the selection of
future agenda items.
Committee Member Dannhaeuser requested the guidelines for HPC going to City Council.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 12: Adjourn.

AGENDA ITEM NO. 2: The Historic Preservation Committee will develop a mission
statement, goals and strategies for 2004.
Mission statement: The City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee strives to collect,
preserve and share the history of the College Station area. This includes recognition of historic
buildings, structures and subjects; educational programs and training for committee members, staff and
neighbors.
