HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/11/2003 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee February 11, 2003 CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS 5:30 PM MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Marsha Sanford, David K. Chester, Sherlei Dannhaeuser, Robert McGee,Bill Lancaster, J.P. Grom, & Alternate Randal Allison. MEMBERS ABSENT: Alexandra Davis& Carol Conlee. STAFF PRESENT: Staff Assistant Deborah Grace, Staff Planners Katie Elrod & Molly Hitchcock, Senior Planner Lee Battle, Planning Intern Lauren Harrell. VISITORS PRESENT: None. Agenda Item No. 1: Call to order. Ms. Sanford called the meeting to order at 5:35 PM. Agenda Item No. 2: Consideration,discussion and possible action on absence requests. Carol Conlee& Alex Davis were absent and did not turn in an absence request form. The Committee did not vote on their absences. Agenda Item No. 3: Hear Visitors. There were no visitors. Agenda Item No. 4: Consideration, discussion and possible action to approve meeting minutes from January 14, 2003. Mr. Lancaster made the motion to approve the minutes. Mr. Allison seconded the motion, which passed(6-0). Agenda Item No. 5: Committee and staff report of pertinent community events pertaining to historical interests. Ms. Elrod told the Committee that she had gone to A&M this morning and viewed a presentation by Bill Paige who is the librarian. The presentation was on African American history in the Brazos Valley. The Committee has been invited to the African American National Heritage Society meeting March 4 @ 7 p.m at the Bryan Library. Ms. Elrod stated that it would be a good time to establish communication with the organization. Mr. Elrod encouraged the Committee Members to attend the meeting. HPC Minutes February 11,2003 Page 1 of 4 Ms. Elrod introduced Lauren Harrell the HPC intern. Lauren has her masters from University of Texas with an emphasis in Historic Preservation. Ms. Harrell gave the Committee a brief history of her background. Lauren spoke to the Committee about Preservation Day 2003 happening in Austin Tuesday, February 25. There will be legislative updates on preservation issues in Texas. Ms. Elrod encouraged Committee members to attend. Agenda Item No. 6: Discussion regarding attending the THC Regional Workshop in Denton, Texas on February 28. Ms. Elrod asked if there were any members interested in attending. No Committee member was able to commit at this point. Ms. Elrod stated that her and Lauren would be in attendance. Agenda Item No. 7: Report from the Organizational Sub-Committee. The sub-committee did not have a report. Ms. Elrod discussed the Committee's charge. Ms. Elrod told them that they are to facilitate a report to City Council listing their reasons for placing the collected documents at the Carnegie Library of the Brazos Valley. The group set a date of February 21 to meet. Agenda Item No. 8: Report from the Historic Home Plaque Sub-Committee The sub-committee did not have a report. The group set a date of February 17 to meet. Chairman Sanford told the Committee that Mayor Ron Silvia has been asked to present the home plaques that were approved at the last meeting. The plaques will be presented at the February 27 City Council Meeting. Ms. Hitchcock stated that a member of this Committee should be there as well. Agenda Item No. 9: Report on Committee volunteer projects: Cataloging of Stagecoach Inn artifacts and Archeological dig on the site of the Old Black School. Committee members Allison and Dannhaeuser told the Committee that they had attended the dig at the Old Black School. They told the Committee they had found some items that were of significance. Ms. Dannhaeuser& Mr. Allison told the Committee about several older gentlemen and children that gathered at the site. They involved the children in digging, sifting and working with the cataloging. Items that were collected were river shells, pet remains,buttons, hinges and a bottle. Ms. Dannhaeuser told the Committee that she had also worked at the Stagecoach Inn. She said that this project is going to be a little more involved than what was presented initially. It is going to be an on- going project for at least 3 to 4 months. Mr. Allison stated that he did the work at the Old Black School as a"good neighbor." He added that at some point in time HPC may be in the position to do a similar project and he looked at it as being a good neighbor. HPC Minutes February 11,2003 Page 2 of 4 Agenda Item No. 10: Consideration, discussion and possible action regarding collection and preserving historic documents. The Committee reviewed the location of the oral history project. The oral history binders are in the Development Services Office. The cassette tapes and videos are at the College Station Conference Center. A Committee member reported that Haskell Monroe is a professional transcriber at TAMU. The Committee requested a copy of the written half of the book that Jeff Carroll wrote for the HPC. Mr. Lancaster presented the following outline regarding tasks for the Historic Material Collection Project. - Research & communicating with the public. - Researching the populous. - Newspaper activities - Websites - Letters written to older, established citizens, families& businesses. - Develop lists of likely persons from those who participated in the recording sessions of the tapes that Jeff Carroll now has. - Visiting with organizations: Lions, Kiwanis, etc. Also the other historical groups within the county. - Encourage people to find pertinent pictures, published stories, newspaper articles, letters, anything that would illustrate how people lived, how they worked, or how they entertained themselves in by-gone days. -Receiving and copying documents given or loaned to us. - Assure donors that we can receive, copy documents without harming them, and return them without a reasonable period of time. -Be in position to pick up such documents from the donors, copy them and return them without much trouble on the part of the donor. Agenda Item No. 11: Consideration, discussion and possible action in the selection of future agenda items.
