Historic Preservation Committee
September 24, 2002
CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS
5:30 P.M.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Sanford, Lancaster, McGee, Dannhaeuser, Chester, Grom &
Davis.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Member Conlee& McDermott.
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Assistant Grace, Staff Planner Hitchcock & Senior Planner Battle,
City Planner Kee, Assistant City Manager Brown.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 1: Oath of Office.
Members Chester, Grom & McGee took their Oath of Office.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 2: Call to Order.
Chairman Sanford called the meeting to order.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 3: Consideration, discussion and possible action on absence requests.
Members Conlee and McDermott were absent and turned in no absent request form. The Committee
did not vote on their absence.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 4: Hear Visitors.
No visitors spoke.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 5: Consideration, discussion and possible action on Committee
purpose, goals and projects.
Chairman Sanford went over the Committee's Purpose, Duties and Responsibilities for the newly
appointed members.
The Committee discussed the# 1 ranked project, a place to store documents and materials.
Locations discussed:
Veteran's Park
Arts Council Building once vacated in Wolf Pen Creek
Sterling Evans Library—they will archive records but then does the material become
property of TAMU
College Station Library—the building is designed for expansion

The discussion led to the question of where is the best location for displaying the items where the
citizens would have access. Chairman Sanford stated that she felt the conference center would be her
first choice since it is accessed by many out of town visitors. City Staff'will explore what options there
are for storage and bring back their findings to the October 8th meeting.
Chairman Sanford discussed an idea she had concerning a Historic Preservation sign when people were
remodeling a historic home. The sign would promote awareness, pride and motivate others. The sign
would be limited to homes of 50 years or older. Mr. Battle told the Committee that there needed to be
guidelines and criteria for such a program. Something internally would need to trigger the sign. Mr.
Battle will look into and bring back his findings to the Committee.
Mr. Battle discussed the Northgate Historic Resources Reference Guide. Mr. Battle will make copies
available to members and will be mailed with next months agenda.
Mr. Luther discussed a photo history of the Southside area.
Mrs. Dannhaeuser told the Committee that the Appraisal District also has archives with pictures&
maps.
Chairman Sanford asked the Committee to review the project list and make any comments and ways to
implement.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 6: Consideration, discussion and possible action on future agenda
items.
Ms. Davis made a motion to discuss the creation of historic districts and regulation. Mr. Grom
seconded the motion, which passed unopposed (5-0).
Mrs. Dannhaeuser made the motion to discuss current holdings and how to expand. Mr. Chester
seconded the motion, which passed unopposed (5-0).
AGENDA ITME NO. 7 Adjourn
The meeting was adjourned.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 6: Discussion of City Website.
The group discussed this item and placed it for future discussion when new members were appointed.
AGENDA ITEM NO. 7: Consideration, discussion and possible action on future agenda
items.
The group listed the City Website and the collection of historic photos/ documents.
