HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/03/2001 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee Minutes Historic Preservation Committee North Building Upstairs Conference Room 1101 Texas Avenue Wednesday, May 3, 2001 5:30 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Shawn Carlson, Chair; Thomas Taylor; Monte Trenckmann, Marsha Sanford, Margaret Griffith, Bill Lancaster, Myron Gantt, Robert McGee. MEMBERS ABSENT: Deborah Jasek. STAFF PRESENT: Lee Battle, Molly Hitchcock, Jane Kee, and Deborah Grace VISITORS PRESENT: Mike Luther, Benito Florez-Meath. 1. Call to Order: Shawn Carlson called the meeting to order 2. Consider Absence Request from meeting. No requests were received. 3. Hear Visitors: Benito told the Committee that a Planning and Zoning Meeting was also scheduled this same evening and he would be leaving to attend it. Benito invited and encouraged the members, if they have not already, to attend a Planning & Zoning Meeting to see what goes on. 4. Workshop session to develop proiect and program ideas. Lee told the members that the single purpose of the meeting is to set a direction for the the next year or two. Molly briefed the Committee on the Texas Historic Commission Conference she attended Austin. The Committee worked and came up with Program/Project ideas. These ideas were ranked and attached are the results. Historic Preservation Committee Results from May 3`d planning session. Ranking Score Project/program idea 1 17 Place to store historic documents/ materials. Index collected materials. 2 15 Identify historic sites and potential historic plaque locations. Cemeteries, historic buildings. 3 -" 11 Collect historic photos/documents 3 11 Develop web site to promote historic preservation. 5 9 Stay involved in code revision process. 6 8 Develop historic picture book 6 8 Hold a historic preservation fair. Collect materials/promote historic preservation. 8 7 Identify archeological sties 9 6 Participate in the VIP program by the Texas Historic Commission 10 5 Promote historic awareness through media 11 4 Encourage formation of HOA's in historic areas 12 3 Review home plaque program Program ideas not receiving any votes: • Photo document the existing city • Offer memorial plaques as a fundraiser • Rotate an exhibit on historic preservation throughout the community • Historic treasure hunt event to promote awareness • Send HPC members to conferences • Develop and give presentations about City history to local groups • Identify local speakers able to talk about City history • Neighborhood recognition program College Station 3-ristoric Preservation Committee Proposed Purpose and Duties and Responsibilities Purpose Assist in preserving the history of College Station. Duties and Responsibilities The duties of this committee shall be to: • Collect and preserve information and materials related to the history of College Station, • Aid in the identification and preservation of historic resources, • Educate citizens and promote the public's awareness of College Station's history and historic resources, • Study concerns related to historic preservation and make recommendations where applicable, • Give advice to the City Council on matters related to historic preservation, • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the City Council. Historic Preservation Committee Minutes,May 3,2001 Page 2 Marsha made a motion to meet once during the summer. Tom seconded the motion, which passed (7-0). Jane told the members about a June 27 Citizen Committee/Board Meeting. The Council is requesting that all members attend this meeting, as it will include information on committee procedures and an updated on their strategic plan. Further information will be forwarded. 5. Agenda items for Future Meetings. No items were discussed. 6. Adjourn Shawn made the motion to adjourn. Monte seconded the motion.
