Applicable Ordinances: 1991 Standard Building Code table 1104 footnote 10 "36" acceptable if stair or corridor serves occupant load of less than 50." Staff Comments: Minimum stair width is 44" in a Group E Education occupancy building , but is reduced to 36" if stair or corridor serves occupant load of less than 50. While the building is classified as a Group E Educational occupancy the upstairs only houses the office of the director and is not used for educational purposes. The stairs are 42" in width, and the furthest distance of intrusion into that 42" is 23 1/4", leaving 18 3/4" when the lift is unfolded(opened), but when it is folded up, the clear space will be 26". This intrusion would take place only in a very small area, with the remainder of the staircase having a 42" clearance. Fire escape stairs are allowed to be 22" wide and in one small area these stairs would almost 19" wide.
