HomeMy WebLinkAboutMy Story--College Station Pg. 1MY STORY College Station I was born at my parents home, 1109 West 2e Street, Bryan, Texas on February 26, 1930. Dr. Mondrick delivered me with a broken arm, a rough way to come into the world to be in a body cast as a baby for several weeks. As a young man, I was so hyper -active that Monsignor Glessiner from St. Joseph School hesitated to accept me as a student. 1 completed my eight years there, went to Lamar Jr. High for one year and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1948. l stayed in high school an extra year to play football and baseball. That year was the first year our high school had a baseball team. The team was coached by Rex Kathcart. I then went to Texas A&M and played freshman baseball. The freshman class of '52 and 53' lived at the Bryan Air Field Campus but because I was an athlete, we stayed on the main campus at A&M. I transferred to Sam Houston State in 1950. My room mate and I wanted to know how we stood in the Army draft. Ms. Krenek in Brazos County said my name was up February 51'. We talked with the Navy recruiter. He also saw my time was February 51'. A group of students went back to Huntsville and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. It took a Pullman Coach from Houston to transport us to San Antonio. We had two weeks basic at Lackland Air Force Base, two weeks casual and then to Randolph Air Force Base. The Air Cadet program was being phased out as the Air Force Academy was opening at Lowery Air Force, Denver, Colorado. After basic, I was assigned to the Hospital in the Physical Therapy Department. Bryan Air Force Base was re -opening. I did rebuilding of the hospital much of my time before it was ready to open. We had a T-28 crash. The pilot and student were brought to our hospital but had to be air evacted to San Antonio, Lackland Air Force Base. I broke my leg while playing softball at Bryan Air Force Base. My job was working in the Dispensary as a corpsman and doing some physical therapy. During my time at Bryan, I was chosen Airman of the year. From Bryan, I was sent to Pepperall Air Force Base at St. John's Newfoundland in March, 1953. I was assigned corpsman on an
