College Station
I was born at my parents home, 1109 West 2e Street, Bryan, Texas on February 26,
1930. Dr. Mondrick delivered me with a broken arm, a rough way to come into the world
to be in a body cast as a baby for several weeks. As a young man, I was so hyper -active
that Monsignor Glessiner from St. Joseph School hesitated to accept me as a student. 1
completed my eight years there, went to Lamar Jr. High for one year and graduated from
Stephen F. Austin High School in 1948. l stayed in high school an extra year to play
football and baseball. That year was the first year our high school had a baseball team.
The team was coached by Rex Kathcart.
I then went to Texas A&M and played freshman baseball. The freshman class of '52 and
53' lived at the Bryan Air Field Campus but because I was an athlete, we stayed on the
main campus at A&M.
I transferred to Sam Houston State in 1950. My room mate and I wanted to know how
we stood in the Army draft. Ms. Krenek in Brazos County said my name was up
February 51'. We talked with the Navy recruiter. He also saw my time was February
51'. A group of students went back to Huntsville and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. It
took a Pullman Coach from Houston to transport us to San Antonio. We had two weeks
basic at Lackland Air Force Base, two weeks casual and then to Randolph Air Force
Base.
The Air Cadet program was being phased out as the Air Force Academy was opening at
Lowery Air Force, Denver, Colorado. After basic, I was assigned to the Hospital in the
Physical Therapy Department. Bryan Air Force Base was re -opening. I did rebuilding of
the hospital much of my time before it was ready to open. We had a T-28 crash. The
pilot and student were brought to our hospital but had to be air evacted to San Antonio,
Lackland Air Force Base.
I broke my leg while playing softball at Bryan Air Force Base. My job was working in
the Dispensary as a corpsman and doing some physical therapy. During my time at
Bryan, I was chosen Airman of the year. From Bryan, I was sent to Pepperall Air Force
Base at St. John's Newfoundland in March, 1953. I was assigned corpsman on an
