HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
WEDNESDAY, MAY 9, 1990, 7:00 PM
CENTRAL PARK CONFERENCE ROOM
MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Halter, Chairman; Lois Beach; Joan Lampkin; Larry
Ringer.
STAFF PRESENT: Charles Szabuniewicz, Special Facilities Superintendent;
Emily Baker, Secretary/Receptionist; tionist; Rosemary Johnson,
Economic Development Foundation Administrative
Secretary; Lillian Robinson, Lincoln Center Supervisor.
VISITORS: Doug Peterson, Twin City Development
I. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Gary Halter at 7:10 pm.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Gary asked for approval of the minutes. Joan stated that in III: Approval of Shiloh Marker
Narrative: change the sentence on line 7 to read "Gracie said the cemetery qualified for at
least being 100 years old." The minutes were approved with that change.
III. HEAR VISITORS:
Doug Peterson, with Twin City Development, said Melody Thomas from Community
Development suggested he attend our meeting to discuss his two historical homes on 912
and 908 Montclair that have been moved from campus. 908 Montclair has some fluted trim
and rosette work on the exterior and the interior has some interesting work, also. He
mentioned that he would be renovating the inside and outside and Charlie mentioned that
Dan MacGilvray said the interior could be altered but no drastic alterations to the exterior if
there was to be an historical marker out front.
IV. UPDATE ON LINCOLN CENTER AND SHILOH MARKER NARRATIVE:
Gary presented the revised Shiloh Narrative along with a photo of the schoolhouse and
students and a map. He also stated that the Lincoln Center Narrative was revised and Emily
would type it up and mail it to the Board members. Charlie mentioned that once these are
approved, that will be three plaque through the Committee. Lois moved that we take the
Shiloh Community Narrative to the County Historical Committee; Joan seconded the
motion. Motion passed.
V. UPDATE ON HISTORICAL HOME MARKER PROGRAM:
Lois reported on the meeting with Dan MacGilvray and Joan Rabins yesterday. Dan's first
suggestion was to change the marker to "Historic House" instead of "Historic Homes ". He
agreed that we should have a general criteria that's very broad and would be willing to
identify what "substantially altered" means. He said we should consider working with an
A &M student in trying to identify the houses designed by Ernest Langford. Also, he
suggested that we might want to have somethin written up on the campus houses by a
college student but that would be about $10,111. He did agree that we should have a
brochure on the historic houses and buildings to advertise a walking tour and place them in
the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Bureau.
VI. OTHER BUSINESSBOARD CONCERNS:
Gary received a letter back from the Rock Prairie Baptist Church accepting the offer
marking their site as an historical site rather than historical building, because of extensive
exterior alterations. Emily noted the transmittal letter from Southwell Co. regarding the
drawing of the Historical Marker. The Board noted that the box was crooked on the
drawing; it was suggested that it could be a circle instead of a square that the numbers would
be on; also, change "home" to "house" and a minimum order of 50 -75. Charlie would
proceed with the order to Southwell Co. Charlie said we needed to have a budget, that the
money would come out of the Hotel/Motel Fund. Larry Ringer suggested we set up an
Historic Revolving Fund Account.
VII. ADJOURN:
Gary adjourned the meeting at 7:50 pm.
