Bryan
In 1817, Bryan was incorporated and
became the city of Bryan. That same
year the State of Texas selected a site
south of Bryan for its new land grant
college. In 1876, the Agricultural and
Mechanical College of Texas enrolled
48 students for its first semester.
Today, more than 43,000 students
attend Texas A & M University, mak-
ing it the fourth largest university in
the nation.
Bryan's history is reflected by
some of its homes and neighbor-
hoods. Today, the city boasts an
impressive collection of fine houses
and a downtown business district
remarkable for its length, breadth and

was created in the 1980's to preserve
and highlight these precious
resources. Some of the Bryan
Structures listed on the National
Register of Historic Places include
the Cavitt House and the Carnegie
Library.

Academics and Research
The oldest public institution of higher education in the state, Texas A&M University has earned its position in several areas
among the top 10 schools of the country. As you wander across the campus, whether you're sightseeing or attending a meeting, the

Texas A&M opened for classes in 1876 as an all-male, military college. It has grown into a highly respected co-educational uni-
versity. Texas A&M has a total enrollment of more that 43,000 students, among the largest in the nation. Women form more than 40
percent of the enrollment, and all 50 states plus more than 115 foreign countries are represented.
Though the size of the university is impressive, Texas A&M is committed to a tradition of excellence in teaching, research and
public service. The university has 10 colleges offering 1512 fields of undergraduate study, 148 master's fields, 105 doctoral fields
and two professional degrees. The 2,500 faculty members include a Nobel laureate, a Pulitzer Prize winner, a National Medal of
