A Rich History and a Bright Future RICH in tradition and his tory, Bryan -College Station truly is "Smack in the Heart of Texas." The twin cities are nestled in the lush Brazos Valley, conveniently located at the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and Austin/San Antonio triangle and easily acces- sible from all parts of the state. Residents boast of big -city conve- niences with small-town warmth and hospitality. ■ BRYAN was established in 1859 in honor of William Joel Bryan, nephew of Texas pioneer Stephen F. Austin. Incorporated in 1871, Bryan prospered with its robust agricultural resources and a railway system completed in 1876. That same year, the State of Texas established the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas just south of Bryan. Angelsgate is a bed -and -breakfast inn located in Bryan's historical district. ■COLLEGE STATION, Bryan's sister city, was planned as a model community by college professors when the college could no longer accommodate their living needs on campus. College Station, named as a railway stop by the Postal Service in 1877, burgeoned in the 1960s, when the college opened its doors to women and became Texas ABM University. ■THE CITIES' contrasting styles and variety of attractions have created a harmonious neigh- borly balance for visitors. Bryan has an impressive collection of beautiful homes and business sites with historical and architectural significance in its East Side Histori- cal District and its revitalized downtown area, alongside fine restaurants and community the- aters. College Station is an ener- getic and progressive city with 924 acres of parks and a statewide reputation for quality athletic events. It has grown up alongside Texas ABM University, a major education and research institution. ■ TODAY the twin cities form a delightful community to visit and a business and tourism destination with a unique blend of cultural opportunities and warm hospitality. As you wander across the campus, whether you're sightseeing or attending a meeting, the familiar Aggie greeting of "Howdy!" rings out constantly. Aggies are a friendly breed and proud of their beloved Aggieland. Texas A&M opened for classes in 1876 as an all-male military college. It has grown into a highly respected co-educational university. Texas A&M has a total enrollment of more than 42,000 students, the third largest in the nation. The student body becomes more diversi- fied each year. Women form more than 40 percent of the enrollment, and all 50 states plus more than 115 foreign countries are represented. Though the size of the university is impressive, Texas A&M is committed to a tradition of excellence in teaching, research and public service. The university has 10 colleges offering 151 fields of under- graduate study, 148 master's fields, 105 doctoral fields and two profes- sional degrees. The 2,500 faculty members include two Nobel laure- ates, a Pulitzer Prize winner, a National Medal of Science winner and National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering members. The university also has a comprehensive Study Abroad The Academic Building. program. School traditions, including Muster, Silver Taps and Bonfire, are held dear by Aggies, and you will see evidence of other traditions when you visit the campus. Take an afternoon to stroll the campus; you can stop by the Appelt Aggieland Visitor Center for maps, brochures and tour information, or just ask any Aggie passing by - helping visitors is not just good old Southern hospitality, it's also an Aggie tradition. The Corps of Cadets at A&M. Photo by Bill Meeks. VISITOR INFORMATION Information The Appelt Aggieland Visitor Center is located in Rudder Tower's First Floor Lobby. Academic Building Erected in 1912, it's on the site of Old Main, the first building on the A&M campus. Civil Engineering Building Originally opened in 1932 as the Veterinary Hospital, it still displays the stone animal figurines on the exterior of the building. Student Recreation Center The largest university center in the nation at the time of completion in 1995, the rec center offers a wide variety of activities for students and visitors.
