I’ C NSPECTORSORNER Simpson Strong-Tie has updated their anchorage solutions for the steel strong wall (Engineered Panel For Narrow Wall Bracing). Recent analysis indicates that the addition of a heavy hex nut positioned flush with the top of con- crete improves overall performance of the Steel Strong Wall lateral resisting system. The addition of this nut im- proves performance by transferring some compression load to the anchor bolts. Simpson Strong-Tie recommends the use of the nut at the top of concrete for all SSW18, SSW21, and SSW24 wall models due to high compression loads. All SSWAB anchor bolts will include this nut to simplify installation and set the height of the bolt correctly. For more information concerning narrow wall bracing please contact the College Station Building Division at 979.764.3741. Chris Haver Building Official Project HOLD Treasure Hunt Winners Week 1: Ernie Goode Week 2: Tanya Wilkinson Week 3: Greg Rodgers Week 4: Casey Singleton Week 5: Jesse Staton Week 6: Wanda Mason Grand Prize Winner was Greg Rodgers. Once a week for six weeks, City employees were asked to participate in the Project HOLD Treasure Hunt. Players were challenged to find the answers to the weekly clues within the files of Project HOLD, the Historic Online Library Data- base that houses our community's historic documents, photographs, oral histories and memorabilia. The Treasure Hunt was devised to acquaint employees with the database and how it is used. The grand prize was a framed photo collage depicting College Station history. The history behind each photo in the collage is stored in an envelope on the back of the frame. You can visit Project HOLD at: http://HOLD.cstx.gov Page 12 Volume 6 Issue 9 O N: THEREWS The Brazos County Texas in WWII Event at the George Bush Presidential Museum and Li- brary last Saturday hosted over 1500 attendants. A brief opening ceremony in the rotunda of the museum was standing room only. The crowd quickly dispersed into various parts of the museum which had been set up for interactive gallery talks, veterans' panels, vintage movies, military authors, and memorabilia displays. One gallery talk participant spoke of her three brothers, another of the Fifinella's, others spoke on Camp Hearne, submarines, para- troopers, and the Battle of the Bulge. Lively discussions ensued during the veterans' panels of the cost of WWII, why we went to war, and various aspects of the different theaters of operation. Outside, the 40's vehicles, as well as the WWII era tank and jeep, were a big hit with the car enthusiasts. The gallery talk participants displayed photographs and memorabilia of family members who participated in the war. Others told stories of home front participa- tion. Vintage music was played on a Victory Steinway as young cadets in vintage military uniform escorted models in a 40's fashion show. The fashion show included a 1946 wedding dress and a replica of Gen. Patton's Third Army uniform. Guests dined at cabaret tables during the fashion show. The greatest benefit of the event was the opportunity to share in the stories of the veterans and their families. The WWII era came to life on Saturday through tears, stories, photographs, atmosphere and even laughter. The Neighborhood Services Staff, the Texas in WWII Steering Committee, the George Bush Presidential Museum and Library, and the almost 200 volunteers and participants are to be commended on a job well done. Many local veterans and their families en- joyed the celebration of the 60th anniver- sary of the end of WWII. HPC member and long time College Station resident, Bill Lan- caster, discusses what it was like to be at A & M Consolidated High School during WWII. Claudine Hunting tells a story to the children about her experience as a French citizen during WWII (above). HPC member and WWII Vet, Neal Nuttall, and Katie Elrod reciting the Pledge of Allegiance during the Opening Ceremony of Texas in WWII (left).
