The most commonly used marker for conveying this designation is the medallion and plate (also referred to as a building marker); however. the 18" x 28" or 27" x 42" size marker may be ordered for those who wish a greater amount of historical information to appear in the • marker text. Jones and Patsy Todd Silva "And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this I L place; and I knew it not... And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven... And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it... And he called the name of that place Bethel." II Bethel Cemetery is located in the Harvey Community approximately seven miles east of Bryan, Texas. It is about one mile north off Highway 30 on Hardy Weedon Road. The cemetery is referred to as Old Bethel because the church after which it was named was moved to a new location in the early 1900's, probably about 1907. This is indicated in the records of the church.' As in every small rural community, there is at least one or more graveyards. Many are located in I Ity the proximity of the churches of that community. This is not the case of Bethel, and therein lies an interesting story about the people of the community. There is, however, an unbreakable bond between Bethel Cemetery and Bethel Baptist Church. Th can be explained by looking at the legal documents that give a ten -acre tract to the church in 1869. An original deed recorded in the Brazos County Courthouse cites the official beginning of the cemetery's history. Mary A. Williams, a resident of the area, donated the site on which I C the cemetery exists. This document, dated in 1869, gives us a look at the first recorded document that officially brings into existence a cemetery. (The State of Texas, County of Brazos) I I Know all men by these presents that I, Mary A. Williams of said County and State for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar and other valuable consideration to me in hand paid by the Trustees of Bethel Church the receipt whereof is hereby fully acknowledged have this day granted, bargained, and Donated unto him the said Trustees of Bethel Church and their successors for the purpose of building and maintaining a Church upon the same. The following described tract or lot of • land to wit ten acres being a tract of a fifty acre tract a part of the League of land known in the records of said County as the Maria Keggan League, Beginning at a point on the North line so as to include a square two acre block to include the present Bethel Church House. And hereby warrant and defend the Title to said Ten acre tract. To the said Trustees of Bethel Church and their successors forever against the claim of any and all persons claiming or to claim the same. C w In testimony whereof I here unto set my hand and seal 30 day of October, A. D. 1869 Mary A. Williams In presence of John Ferguson Anson Hudson From this deed, it is evident that there existed a Bethel Churchhouse on a two -acre tract within this 10 -acre block granted by Mrs. Williams. At this point, we know that Bethel Church actually existed prior to October 30, 1869, but the additional land was obviously donated to the congregation to provide more space for Bethel Cemetery. It was customary in this period to bury members of the congregation in the churchyard, and this obviously was the practice in this C v. Church.4 Charles B. Jones and Charles Eric Jones searched and logged every grave that could be detected in the cemetery and I therefore the history of the cemetery can be best told through listing the names of persons buried there. From a search of records at the Courthouse, there is reference to land conveyed to Mary A. Williams in the partition of the estate of Henry G. Hudson and Elizabeth Hudson. The oldest grave found in the cemetery is that of Elizabeth H. Hudson (April 6, 1826 to January 19, 1870), daughter -in -law of Elizabeth and Henry G. Hudson. It is possible that the cemetery was first used as the Hudson family cemetery and then as a church cemetery. As earlier mentioned, there was apparently a church on this tract of land prior to the deeding of the land to the Church in 1869, so the family cemetery theory cannot be confirmed, and it may have always been a churchyard; however, there is strong evidence to (10 -2- suggest that it was originally a family cemetery since the graves of the Hudson children and persons that the children married are marked by headstones in the area of the Hudson P lots. The gravestones of Stanley E. M. Hudson's wife, and Leonard Hudson, a son of H. G. Hudson, are found in the area. There are also stones marking Lula Hudson who married W. T. Goen, and other relatives, namely, Susane Wyatt, Jane Maria Goen, Thomas Hudson, Anzia Goen, and Walter L. Ferguson. The Thibodeaux, Shaw, Walder, and Grahams apparently married relatives of the Hudson family as indicated by records, and are buried in the area.' The grave of Mary A. Williams cannot be found in Bethel Cemetery. In the records of the Church, there is found a writing in memory of her, and it states she was born in Black River, Arkansas in 1823 and that she was buried at Bethel the day after her death, October 27, 1899. There is another Mary Williams in the L. C. Williams plot, but this Mary Williams died in 1921. Mary Ann Hudson married Robert Ferguson, and had a son named John Ferguson. After Robert died, she married Dave Williams, thus the name Williams. In 1869 she deeded the 10 acres of Bethel Cemetery to Bethel Church. Buried in Bethel Cemetery are pioneers that came to Texas before it became a state and others that came after the destruction of the War Between The States. One such family was that of Atha and Caroline Soles Todd, along with the families of her sisters. They arrived in Texas on Christmas Eve, 1869. Atha and Caroline were married in Lowndes County, Alabama, 20 February, 1851. After serving in the Confederate Army of Alabama, Atha and Caroline, came with their children, to Texas. Numerous descendants of theirs are buried in Bethel Cemetery, children, grandchildren, and great - grandchildren. Not far from their graves is the grave of Caroline's brother, Dr. Joseph M. Soles, who served the Confederacy as a physician.' 1 Dr. Soles came to Texas in 1869 and served those around him as a physician until his death. - 3 - • Another example of the strength and courage it took to help settle Texas was Amelia • Banes Soles. After the death of her first husband Jared Irwin Ban in Alabama, Amelia i a a Jo ned the families of her sisters, Caroline Todd and Mary Soles Laski, to travel to Texas. Two or three years after moving the Texas Amelia married Rev. William McCullough. Amelia died several days after a fall from a hack on 15 November 1901. Henry G. Hudson, father of Mary A. Williams, is buried here in Bethel Cemetery. Henry joined the Army of the Republic of Texas at Nacogdoches on the 10 December 1835, and was honorably discharged in 1837 at Columbus in the Republic of Texas.' Bethel Cemetery in Brazos County, Texas is the burial place of early Texas Settlers. By recognizing this site with an historical marker we are honoring the hardship and determination these ancestors exhibited in settling this great state. John Bradford wrote a letter to the people of Kentucky, which was printed in the first issue of his • THE KENTUCKE GAZETTE, on 11 August 1781, in which he explained his reasons for establishing the newspaper. One of these reasons was "to give the world a respectable opinion of the people who have come so many miles to cultivate a deserted land." Thus it is that we wish to honor these early settlers and ancestors of Texas buried here in Old Bethel Cemetery." • • • • - 12 - • PHOTOGRAPHS — OLD BETHEL CEMETERY — MAY 15, 1994 • , . .7*, r , • . * .
