HomeMy WebLinkAboutLipscomb Pharmacy History; article (2010) Lipscomb Pharmacy, located at 335 University Drive began operation about 1936. It was the first pharmacy in the community until Aggieland Pharmacy (owned by Mr. Sparks and J. F. Casey), started business in what is now Campus Photo shop. There was also competition from a soda shop and pharmacy located on campus in the YMCA.In 1940, Mr. Edward Madely opened a soda fountain /pharmacy at the southgate and Black's pharmacy opened at the eastgate. Graham Horsely attended grade school on the Texas A &M campus and remembers walking over to northgate for a soda fountain treat at Lipscomb's Pharmacy. He particularly recalls an "ammonia coke"--he thinks they put in extra fizz —but it was very daring at the time. He said that gifts and sundries were for sale in one area and dining booths were near the soda fountain and of course stools along the serving counter. Mr. Horsely also recalls that a pool hall - -off limits to him -- was upstairs above the pharmacy and operated by Mr. McMullen. He added that the upstairs became an adult video business in the sixties. Bill Lancaster recalls that Mr. Lipscomb very much resembled Franklin Roosevelt—as he was portly and wore glasses just like the president. He has happy memories of going to Lipscomb's for a coke after church on Sundays. Bill Hensel said Mr. Lipscomb was a classmate at Texas A &M with his father and that the friendship continued after both men graduated, married and settled in College Station. Mr. Lipscomb was affectionately known as "Doc" because of his vast medical knowledge. Mr. Hensel said that Lipscomb's was definitely the place to meet friends and hang out at the northgate—he enjoyed sitting in the booths and listening to Glen Miller playing on the jukebox . Obviously, Lipscomb's Pharmacy played an important role in the lives of College Station residents for many years — serving their health needs and providing a social gathering place. Mr. Lipscomb leased the building to Mr. Loupot in the early 1970's and it was purchased by Loupot's Inc. about eight to ten years _, ,...
