1997 HIGHLIGHTS ii
President and Mrs. George Bush celebrated
the dedication of the George Bush Presiden-
tial Library and Museum on the Texas A &M
University campus. More than 15,000 guests
attended the ceremony, which included re-
marks by President Bill Clinton, former
Presidents Bush, Carter and Ford and former
First Lady Mrs. Ronald Reagan.
* College Station Library Construction be-
gan.
* Fire Station #1 on Holleman was com-
pleted.
Brazos Valley Heat, won the 1997 Texas
ASA Girl's Fast Pitch State Championship (12
& under) and advanced to the ASA Girl's 12
& Under Fast Pitch National Tournament in
Midland, Texas along with 71 other teams.
qtr College Station National Major Boys Little
League won the state tournament for the first
time in the history of Bryan /College Station
and proceeded to the Southern Regional
Tournament in Florida.
* The mobile "rover" from Earth, named
Sojourner, arrived on the surface of Mars
after being taken there by the M a r s
Pathfinder, an ambitious and, in some re-
spects, revolutionary space probe that rock-
eted from the United States last Decem-
ber. While Earthlings have landed vehicles
on the Martian surface before this is the
first time a maneuverable vehicle roamed
over its rocky terrain, sending back valu-
able data that might help satisfy some of
the age -old curiosity about one of Earth's
closest planetary neighbors.
* Wayne Smith Youth Baseball Complex
construction began.
qtr College Station citizens voted in favor
of building a 45,000 square foot confer-
ence Center. It is expected to open Janu-
ary 2000.

quality shows, beautiful facilities, and down -home hospitalityfor
both performers and guests. The City of College Station promotes
and hosts a variety of in -house shows each year. These include
popular entertainers for adults, movies in the park for families,
and events specifically for kids. In addition, the City welcomes
promoters and private renters who wish to conduct their own
events.
The College Station Conference Center is the ideal place to have
