B. Prominent Historical Figures: Ernest Langford
Ernest Langford wasborn on May 30, t 891 inBallinger, Texas. Although Mr.
Langford was born in Bal his mother and father took the family to live in "two
central Texas towns of closeproximity, and Bertram in Burn et County''~.
Growing up, Mr. Langford was taught many things by both hi : his mother taught
him to do things such as sew things around the house, and his father taught him
carpentry and the skills of building trades.2 So Mr. Langford'sfather was the first
influence in his future as an Architect. On September 19, horne
and traveled by train to study architecture at Texas A. and at
Mr. Langford recalled, in his first architecture class, he was fotmeenprojects to
wi thin the first two w'eeks of the semester. His professor then had himdoing other
projects such as building fm'niture fbr the rest of the semesterfi Afterbeing at A&M for a
while, he got a job as an assistant and when he went to his $110 earnings, he
received his pay in gold bars! It was quite a surprise for a small town boy. He slept with
the gold under his pillow until he could deposit it at the College to ensure his tuition
payment for the next semester,s After graduating from Texas A&M College in 1913.

Mr. Langford was dedicated to his students and the community, strated this
buy instilling his students withthe importance of community involvement by overseeing
his students' projects, such as the design of the new A&M Consolidated School District
in 1939, and the design of the first Cotlege Station City Hall (which is currently the Caf6
Eccell Restaurant adjacent to Welbom Road and Church Street).u Mr: Langford loved

During 1929, Mr. Langford built his family's home at 600 West Dexter Street
(originally 602 West Dexter Street~6) in College Station. and he and his family resided m
the home until 1956. The house was built in the Colonial Revival one of
several houses designed by Mr. Langford. Richard and Candice C / own
