500 stranded at camp after twister hits

About 500 people were stranded at
Camp Allen near Navasota for about
three hours Friday night after a tor-
nado destroyed the camp conference
center and blocked its only road. One
person suffered minor injuries, offi-
cials said.
A spokeswoman with the camp, on
FM 362 near Navasota, said the tor-
nado destroyed the facility's 16 -room
hotel and shattered the windows in
another building. Fallen trees and
power lines blocked the only access
to the camp.
Rescue crews working with chain -
saws cleared the road cleared by
10:30 p.m. and people were leaving
the camp, said a Grimes County
sheriffs department dispatcher.
The storm also destroyed a barn
near FM 50, the dispatcher said. No
other damages or injuries were re-
ported.
Officials with the Brazos County
sheriffs office and the Bryan and Col-
lege Station police departments said
they did not receive any reports of in-
juries or damage.
"We had nine reports of tornado
funnel clouds. yet we have not
received one damage report nor
found any damage or injuries." ,lake

Civil Defense. said Friday night. "If
that isn't lucky, I don't know what
is."
One funnel cloud that apparently
moved toward Easterwood Airport
caused a great deal of concern for
people at Aeroflt, a fitness facility on
the western edge of Bryan.
Aeroflt employees interrupted aer-
obics classes. weightlifting and other
activities to ask some 250 patrons to

move downstairs to the southwest
corner of the two -story building.
"I tried to express to people that it
was serious and it wasn't Just a big
storm like Tuesday," said John Plain,
Aeroflt's night manager, adding that
even a few off -duty employees exer-
cising at the club helped manage the
crowd.
"I think most of the staff under-
stood the situation and took positive
action," he said.
