Fallout shelters can protect against radiation carried by the fine bits of "fallout" coming from nuclear bursts. These radiations are like X-rays. They are slowed and stopped by thick heavy materials such as concrete and earth. If there is no shelter in your school, learn where the nearest fallout shelter is located. YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SHOULD KNOW THE CIVIL DEFENSE WARNING SIGNALS SIGNAL ^/\4^ dW A wavering tone or short blasts for 3 to 5 minutes - Actual attack against this country has been detected - take protective action immediately. • • SIGNAL A steady blast or tone for 3 to 5 minutes - listen for essential emergency information) DO NOT USE PHONE IN AN EMERGENCY If community fallout shelter is not available, home fallout shelters can provide protection.
