CITY GOVERNMENT College Station operates under the council- manager form of government. The mayor and six councilmen are elected at- large, that is, in city -wide elections. Elections are held on the first Saturday in April. The city council meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 4 p.m. and on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7 p.m. each month at College Station City Hall. Adams Place 2 Patricia Boughton Place 4 Jim Dozier Place 6 Lorence L. Bravenec Mayor CITY UTILITIES The City of College Station provides and bills for electricity, water, sewer, and garbage service. A deposit is required for all accounts. Bills are payable by the due date stamped on the individual bill and may be paid from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at city hall. Customers have 15 days to pay their bills. Past due bills are charged an additional fee which cannot be waived or relieved. There is a night deposit window at city hall for use on nights, holidays and weekends. Bank drafts may be arranged, or payments may be mailed to P. O. Box 9960, College Station. All payments should show the account number and customer number and must be received on or before the due date. Services disconnected for non - payment cannot be restored until all due amounts, penalties and re -con- nection fees have been paid. Utility bills are computed per monthly readings of electricity and water meters. Rates are established by city ordinance, and copies of the rate schedules are available upon request at the utility counter in city hall. Meters are property of the city and are not to be turned on or off except by city employees. Unauthorized connection of a meter is illegal under state law. The map on the opposite page shows collection days in your neighborhood. All garbage, that is placed on the curb, must be put in plastic bags with a minimum thick- ness of 2 mils. Garbage may not be set out before the morning of collection day. Trash (leaves, brush, etc.) is not collected with household garbage. Call 696 -8886 for pickup of these materials. There is no charge for this service. You may haul trash to the landfill yourself and no permit is required if you show the landfill oper- ator proof of residency —that is, a recent utility bill stub. The landfill is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays and Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on other weekdays. PARKS AND RECREATION The College Station Parks and Recreation Department maintains 22 parks, totaling approximately 240 acres. Ten of these parks are currently developed. The parks and recreation department also organizes athletic pro- grams, including softball, soccer, basketball and flag football. Call the parks and recreation department at 696- 4753 for information concerning these programs. The office is located at 1000 Eleanor Stre., College Station. Welsh Park —Welsh Drive 47.22 acres 10.00 acres ANIMAL CONTROL The city requires that all dogs and cats must be licensed and must be under physical restraint at all times. The fee for licensing is $1.00, and a veterinarian's certificate of rabies vaccination must be shown. If your pet is missing, you should check with the police department, 696 -8864. The police department will hold animals in a veterinary clinic for 72 hours before they will be destroyed. If a pet is impounded, the owner may reclaim it by payment of boarding fees and any fines which may be imposed. MISCELLANEOUS Garage sales are limited by ordinance to one each six months per resident. A permit and $1.50 fee is re- quired for a sale, which is a maximum 72 hours. Land uses in residential zones are restricted by the city's zoning ordinance. Copies of the zoning ordi- nance and zoning map are available at city hall at printing costs. Building permits are required for all construction other than ordinary minor repairs such as re- painting, re- roofing, or one - for -one replacement. If your home or apartment was built after June, 1975, it is equipped with a smoke detector. We recommend thai you check the detector's operation regularly. Assistance to students with housing problems is available through the Off - Campus Information and Referral Center, 845 -1741. Bicyclists are required by law to use bicycle lanes where they are provided. These lanes are marked by a solid line between the bicycle lane and other traffic lanes.
