It could save your life. VI. As of this date the total number of marked, and stocked shelter spaces in Brazos County is slightly over 20,000 spaces. Your county civil defense office and local gov- ernment continue to mark, stock and encour- age shelter spaces in new buildings. VII. The public shelter program is designed to utilize existing shelter areas for public use. Home shelters for you and your family are still your best survival plan. PUBLIC FALLOUT SHELTER USE PLAN FOR BRAZOS COUNTY BRYAN, COLLEGE STATION, AND TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY 1. Public shelters will be opened by your local government when there is a threat of radioactive fallout. 2. Persons seeking shelter will be admitt- ed until all shelter spaces are filled. 3. All shelters will be operated under the authority and control of your local government. SHELTER INFORMATION 1. Each public shelter is stocked with a two week supply of emergency rations and emergency first aid kits. 2. When seeking protection in public shel- ters; if possible take the following items: a. Sleeping equip. (Blankets, sleeping bags, etc.) b. Special medicines c. Special foods for babies, diabetics, etc. d. Portable water canteens (Filled) e. First aid kits f. Rolls of paper towels and extra non- perishable food supplies you might have. 3. Each public shelter will have the following local government trained officials assigned for shelter operation. a. Shelter manager c. Police officer b. Radiological monitor d. Communications officer, and med- ical trained personnel. 4. Plans are made to have each shelter in con- tact with local government control centers via telephone and two -way radio. 5. Things you should do now: 1. Keep a two week food supply on hand. 2. Keep on hand a working battery operated radio. 3. Inform and prepare yourself and your family for local and national emergen- cies. The Following Courses Are Available Through The Brazos County Civil Defense Office (Located in the Courthouse) a. Medical self -help b. Adult civil defense education c. Radiological monitor training d. Shelter management training e. Police training for auxiliary police officers. Contact your local Red Cross Office for First Aid Training. Home shelter designs 4. Fallout protection Your local government has a 200 bed emergency hospital complete with medicines ready for a serious local or national emergency. CIVIL DEFENSE IS YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES. YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SHOULD KNOW WHERE THE NEAREST FALLOUT SHELTER IS.
