Box 46, Bryan, Tx. 77806 NEWS LETTER Meeting: Monday, August 3, 1987, 7:00 PM, Community Room, Manor East Mall, Bryan, Tx. Dear REACTor, May I take just a moment to say "phew ": For once, we have had a relatively quiet month. As far as I know, there have been no major activities, of an emergency nature, to repert to you.- It is nice to occasionally be able to report this but I am sure that "guards" cannot be dropped; we must still remain REACTors and be ready, willing and able to respond to any request for assistance from our community. I want to commend Andy Andrews for his presentation at our last meeting. We have been in need of a review of our TEAM SOP for some time now and I feel that Andy brought to light some areas that we have all been somewhat negligent in. Let's all do our best to stay within the guidelines and intent of the SOP. I realize that there are some parts that may need some revision and we will be giving this our attention in the very near future. Individual commitment to a group effort is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. - Vince Lombardi Brazos County REACT has been requested to assist the Bryan Police Department and other area law enforcement agencies in the "National Night Out" activities on August 11, 1987. This is "America's Night Out Against Crime ". It occurrs once a year, on the second Tuesday in August. People all across the nation take time out to focus their attention on safer neighborhoods, towns and cities. The program is promoted nation wide by the National Association of Town Watch and is designed to create a public awareness of the concepts that make up the Neighborhood Watch Program. It is designed also to send a strong message of unity from the citizens of the community to the criminals. Each year special events are organized by participating cities and towns. These events involve local and state officials, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and residents of the community in a wide variety of observances designed to promote unity and send a strong crime prevention message to the criminal element. There will be a number of activities on this Tuesday night. These include; a Five Mile Chain of People, The World's Longest Popsicle Stick, (this will be entered in the Guinese Book of World Records as there currently is no record for this "amazing feat ".), a national balloon release, once the balloons are released at 8 PM there will be 60 seconds of noise provided by police and fire sirens, bells, horns, church bells etc., and then a tour of "Safe Street USA." Brazos County REACT NEWS LETTER - July 1987 Page 2 This sounds like it will not only be a "fun event" but an event in which REACT, as a participant, can express it's committment to the commun- ity effort to make Bryan /College Station a better, safer place to live. I will have many more details for you at the meeting. "If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it at the beginning." - Mahatma Gandhi I would like to take a moment to recognize one of our Team Members, Robert Holubec, for accepting an appointment to the position of Training Officer. Robert has already been putting a lot of effort into organizing training programs for the Team and I am sure that he will serve us very well in the future. Keep up the good work, Robert: One night last week I received a phone call from Joel Brandes, with Community Concerts, Inc., in California. He informed me that their Advance Publicity Manager would be here August 15th. Also, he said the concert would have to be put off till sometime in November. I am to be receiving more information on this in the mail very shortly. If it comes before the meeting I can report to you on it. THOUGHTS TO SHARE DEPARTMENT There are two days in every week about which it is futile to worry. One is yesterday with it's burdens and blunders. The other is tomorrow, which is beyond absolute control. That leaves us today, during which we can do something to make yester- day's trials bearable or do nothing except dread what tomorrow may bring. Have you noticed the skip on Channel 09 lately: It has been very hard to tell if a person calling for assistance is local or somewhere in "Skipland ". All I can tell you is "do the best you can ". Don't let these unusual conditions stop you from monitoring or taking a call you could probably handle. Yours truly has taken a few, thinking they were local, and worked a relay back to a REACT base station in the same local area as the caller. Sometimes a motorist can be heard, under these conditions, 700 -800 miles away more clearly than in his own community, so don't discount the possibility of being able to help. Another subject we should all be thinking about at this time of year is Hurricane Season. Now is, the time to be making sure your mobile equip- ment and any emergency materials necessary are in good shape and where you can locate them. Hopefully we will not have to be involved in this type of activity but should it become necessary, let's all be able to assist in the efficient, professional manner our community expects of REACT. Brazos County REACT Page 3 NEWS LETTER - July, 1987 Let's all try and be at the meeting on Monday night. It has been nice to see the good turn outs we have been having lately and I hope to see everyone again this time. BRING A FRIEND.' Yours REACTively, Robert G. Shearer President Brazos County REACT Sign on the wall of Ray Kroc, developer of the McDonald's fast food chain: Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with great talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence, determination alone are omnipotent.
