NEWS LETTER
Meeting: Monday, June 1, 1987, 7:00 PM
Community Room, Manor East Mall, Bryan, Tx.
Dear REACTer,
As most of you know, we are in the midst of the turbulent weather
season for our part of the country, so let's all try and stay aware of
impending "bad weather situations" as they occurr. Anytime we have alerts
I will be in contact with Mr. Jake Cangelosi atthe weather center at
TAMU and Mr. Steve Beachy at the Emergency Operations Center in College
Station. They will notify me if it becomes necessary for REACT to
mobilize. Should you have any questions concerning weather related sit-
uations please contact myself or Earl Adams and we should be able to
advise you of the situation.
Mr. Steve Beachy, Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of
College Station, will be back with us at the meeting on June 1. He will
be showing a film on tornadoes which will impress you. Some of us saw
the film during the "Twister III" exercise and I can assure you that it
will get your attention. It is an actual, live filming of tornado sit-
uations and the emergency management that was involved. I strongly urge
you to be present for this presentation.

a $6.00 fee for work books and materials. The location of the class will

I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always
reach my destination.
As everyone is aware, the Area V Council meeting scheduled for May 16th
in Bryan, was cancelled. The reason for cancellation you may not be aware
of. Our Area V President, Dickie George, lost her Mother and Uncle just a
very few days prior to the meeting. Our prayers and sympathy are extended
to Dickie and her family.
I am also advised that we may have a "mini meeting" for Area V at the
State meeting in Houston on June 16th . If you need transportation to this
meeting be sure to let one of your officers know.
I have also been advised by Dickie that REACT has been contacted re-
garding the Pope's visit to San Antonio. REACT has been asked to assist
with both communications and medical help (American Red Cross trained
members). This will be discussed in more detail at the State meet in
Houston. The Pope will be in San Antonio on Sept. 13 with REACT being
needed Sept. 12 - 14. They are expecting some 500,000 people at this
evert. If you might be able to assist, please let me know.

I want to take just another moment, as your President, to thank each
one of you for your concern, cooperation and participation in the search
and the following efforts by the law enforcement agencies in this area
concerning the dissapearance of Kandy Kirtland. Your understanding and
willingness to contribute time and material resources to the location and,
hopefully, safe return of this little girl to her family cannot be measured.
In closing I would like to leave you with a thought from Hayden Fry:
Somebody once asked President Eisenhower why he ever bought that farm
of his in Gettysburg, Pa. He told them that all his life he wanted to
take a piece of ground that really hadn't been cared for - cultivated or
fertilized or watered -and work with everything he had and leave it in better
condition than he found it. It's a simple statement, but many of us have
that urge to make a winner of a loser. That's our way of life. There's no
challenge too big for anyone.
