HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/13/1991 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1991 7:00 P.M. CENTRAL PARK CONFERENCE ROOM MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Halter, Chairman, Joan Lamkin, Eric Schulte, Florace Kling, Bonnie Woolverton, Lois Beach, Les Hawkins, Roger Feldman, MEMBERS ABSENT: Cynthia Sampson, Nancy Crouch, Council Liaison STAFF PRESENT: Linda Waltman, Recreation Superintendent, Bridgette George, Secretary/Receptionist, I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:05 P.M. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes were approved for October 9, 1991. III. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: There were no applications to review. The Committee would like to see some kind of advertisement done to get interest up about applying for plaques. IV. SET DATE FOR PLAQUE PRESENTATIONS: No date was set for plaque presentations. David will call Gary if any presentations dates are set for the City Council meetings. V. TRAIN STATION REPORT: Gary will speak to Charles Schultz about setting up a meeting with Eric Schulte. Eric has gathered some information on the train station. The University archives is only opened Monday- Friday from 8am -5pm, restricting him from going after work. He is hoping to use the Christmas Holidays to do more research. Eric found some train station photos at the archives and had them duplicated. They will be submitted with the marker application. The total cost for the photos was $41.75. The Committee agreed to reimburse Eric for the cost of the photos. Historic Preservation Committee Wednesday, November 13, 1991 Page 2 VI. REVIEW CALENDAR FOR DECEMBER MEETING: The meeting for December will be held in conjunction with the Parade of Lights reception at the Victorian. Linda Waltman stated that the Parks Department will send invitations to the Historic Preservation Committee to attend the reception on December 17th, from 7 -9pm. VII. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: Lois stated that Eric Schulte's house will be on the Brazos Historic Homes Tour in February 8th & 9th, from 1 -5pm. She was asked to be the house captain and needs 24 people to help work in about 2 hour shifts. Gary stated that he wrote to President Mobley suggesting that a committee be created to work on historic markers for the campus. He thought it was a great idea and asked Gary for possible committee members, which Gary in turn sent to him. Gary recently received a letter appointing him Chairman to that committee. They have not had a meeting yet, but will within the next few weeks. He believes that they will not get State Historic markers, but that the University will go with their own. Les did research on the airport which does not qualify for a historic marker. He stated that Easterwood Airport was named after an A &M graduate, who was in World War I. His plane crashed in Panama where he died. His parents were interested in aviation and when the father died he left $25,000 to the airport. Gary mentioned getting the file cabinet set up at the Library to put all the gathered information in. Bridgette stated that David Gerling spoke with Clara Mounce and Mary Henshaw several weeks ago and would address the Committee about their meeting at the next Historic meeting. Christmas Open House will be at the Conference Center on December 5th, from 3 -7pm. Bridgette will check with Gracie Calbert, Conference Supervisor, about getting a room to set up and pass out historic information at the Open House. VIII. ADJOURN: The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 P.M.
