CENTRAL PARK CONFERENCE ROOM MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Halter- Chairman, Joan Lamkin, Eric Schulte, Cynthia Sampson, Bonnie Woolverton, Les Hawkins, Nancy Crouch - Council Liaison MEMBERS ABSENT: Lois Beach, Roger Feldman, Florace Kling, STAFF PRESENT: David Gerling, Special Facilities Superintendent, Bridgette George, Secretary/Receptionist, VISITORS PRESENT: Pat Hiler -2nd Vice President Brazos Heritage Society L CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:11 P.M. IL APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes were approved. IIL BRAZOS HERITAGE SOCIETY REQUEST: Pat Hiler, 2nd Vice President of Brazos Heritage Society, presented a brochure that was done 10 years ago History of Brazos County). The Society would like to reproduce it to update it. Me Chamber has stated that they could hand out 30,000 copies. The second largest request that the Chamber gets is for historical sites. The budget was approved for the Historic Preservation Committee. The fees are estimated at $2,800 and the promotion and printing will be $4,600 for 50,000 copies. The Society is asking for $1,000 donations from the Historic Preservation Committee, the City of Bryan and Brazos County. They will get matching funds from the Art's Council. The Historic's budget is likely to be used for the Lincoln marker, the Rockprairie Church and possibly for the Carter headstones. The current balance is $2,250. Gary stated that he doesn't believe that the Lincoln marker will be finalized this year. The Committee approved to donate $1,000 to the Brazos Heritage Society for their brochure. W. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: #13 - 315 Suffolk Avenue (Campus House #232) : Steven & Laura Strawn #14 - 1309 Walton : Joseph & Karen Motes The Strawn's application was approved pending receipt of more information. Historic Preservation Committee Wednesday, September 11, 1991 Page 2 The Motes' application was approved. That house was previously the Thomas' home. Thomas Park was named after Mr. Thomas. Mrs. Thomas was very instrumental in getting the park system started. V. PLAQUE PRESENTATIONS DATES: On October 10th, #1 -601 Montclair and #4 -1004 Ashburn Avenue, will receive a certificate for their homes; they have already been presented there plaques. #7- 115 Lee Avenue, #8 -908 Montclair and #9 -912 Montclair will receive plaques and certificates on the aforementioned date. VL RICHARD CARTER UPDATE: David presented the Committee with a slide presentation showing the removal of Richard Carter and his family from their original burial sites. No remains of Richard Carter were found except for some discoloration of dirt and a nail from his coffin. Elizabeth, his wife, was buried in a mummy - shaped iron casket. Attempts were made to find a mark on the coffin, in hopes of finding who made it, but none were found due to the excessive deterioration. The casket had rusted through and was full of clay. Some bone fragments were found from the other three individuals that were discovered out there. One was Helen Ligon, thought to be Richard Carter's daughter, the other two identities are still unknown. The reburial was performed at Richard Carter Park, where his original homesite was. Each of the remains were replaced in a separate concrete casket. A fence will be built at a later date and will surround all separate individuals' graves. The Committee would like to see headstones reproduced from the originals. The Committee has some pictures that were taken in 1960 which show in fairly good detail the original headstones. The Committee also received a copy of Richard Carter's Will. VIL OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: Gary wrote a letter to A &M's President Mobley about getting a program started for historic markers on campus. President Mobley has asked Robert Smith to head up an effort to get a program underway. Gary met with Mr. Smith and outlined what our Committee does. Mr. Smith also asked Gary if he knew anyone at A &M who would be good candidates for their program. Mr. Smith believes that A &M could get their markers cast for a lesser price than what the State charges. Les has collected a lot of information on the airport. He would like to gather a little more information before he ends his research. The data acquired will then be stored for future use. VIII. ADJOURN: Gary adjourned the meeting at 8:24 pm.
