HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/13/2009 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee Minutes Historic Preservation Committee Monday, July 13, 2009 4 pm College Station Conference Center Room, #106 1300 George Bush Drive College Station, Texas 77840 Attendance: Earl Apgar, Susan Irza , Louis Hodges, Hillary Jessup, Lisa Kalmus, Colleen Risinger, Meredith Waller, Ernie Wright. Approved Absence: James T. McGinnis, Anne Triche-Steen Unapproved Absence: N/A Staff Attendance: David Gerling, Division 82 Supervisor, PARD Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs Coordinator Visitors: N/A Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Hillary Jessup at 4:00 p.m. Agenda Item #2-3: Hear Visitors: N/A Agenda Item #4: Absence Request Absence requests were approved. (EA/lh) Agenda Item #5: Approval of the minutes. Motion was made, seconded to approve the minutes of June 1, 2009. (LH/si) Agenda Item #6: Possible action and discussion on Council appointments to HPC. The HPC appointments will be announced at the July 23 regular council meeting. Agenda Item #7: Possible action and discussion on El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. David G. reported that the Cost Share Grant application was submitted to the National Park Service (NPS). Subsequent conversations and emails from NPS have caused the El Camino de los Tejas project committee to rethink their plan and will be seeking other avenues of funding. Agenda Item #8: Possible action and discussion on historic marker applications. Hillary and Anne B. reported on the discussions of the Landmark Commission concerning newer types of recognition: smaller plaques, letters of appreciation, certificates. Hillary suggested putting marker discussions on the retreat agenda in the Fall. Anne reminded the committee of the change in date for the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church marker presentation to July 23 at the regular council meeting. Agenda Item #11: Committee Reports: Landmark Commission (Hillary) Hillary reported that the Southside historic district overlay could be approved by the end of summer. The Landmark Commission also hosted the City of Bryan Landmark Commission at a previous meeting to learn about their operations. Anne B. reported that she had presented the HPC and Heritage Programs to the Landmark Commission, as well. Exploring History Lunch Lectures (Ernie, James and Hillary) Ernie reported that all months have been verified. Anne B. gave the Exploring History Lunch Lecture surveys to the committee for assessment. Anne B. reported that handing out plates at the cash table worked well in trying to document the number of guests and justifying the cash box. Historic Markers (Meredith, Hillary and James) Earl, Hillary and Meredith will be present at Historic Building Marker #9 to the members of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at the July 23 regular Council Meeting. Oral History Project (Lou and Anne T.) Lou reported that he had completed the editing of one more of the Campus Kids oral histories. He is still in the process of adding photographs to the document. Project HOLD (Lou, Colleen, Susan and Anne T.) See PH Progress Report. Anne B. announced that Heritage Programs and Project HOLD are the recipients of a national award: The American Association of State and Local History Leadership in History Award. Lisa commented that the award is very prestigious. The AASLH has been in existence since the turn of the century. Our entry won over 59 other entries. David G. reported on that the fiber-optic cable addition to the Conference Center is still on hold. Anne B. reported that the purchase of PastPerfect software is also on hold due to budget constraints. Education Committee (Ernie, Earl and Lisa) Ernie reported that plans are underway to continue meetings with Steve Beachy and Alston Thoms to get the Native American interpretive site at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex rolling. Lisa reported that the opening of the interpretive area will coincide with Archaeology Month in October.
