Historical Perspective The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the outgrowth of two statewide organizations that came t into existence as early as 1890: the Daughters of the Confederacy in Missouri and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Tennessee. The } UDC was organized on September 10, 1894, in Nashville, Tennessee, to honor the memory of those " \N ho served and those who tell in the service of the Confederate States of America. The name United Daughters of the Confederacy pays tribute to Varma Anne ("Winnie") Davis, youngest daughter of Jefferson . 6'1 << i and Varina Howell Davis. Mrs. Caroline Meriwether Goodlett of Tennessee was the UDC founder and Mrs. Anna Davenport Raines of Georgia was co-founder. Today's UDC members continue the ifnportant mission of honoring., protecting, and preserving their Confederate heritage to ensure that the noble sacrifices made by their ancestors during the War Between the States are not forgotten. UDC Terms and Information zVotto "Think, Love, Pray, Dare, Live" is the official motto of the UDC. + Emblem The emblem of the UDC is a cotton boll superimposed on a five-pointed star with one word of the motto inside each of the five points. Colors Red and white - the colors of the secession cockades worn by Southern women during the War - are the official colors of the UDC. Flag The First National Flag of the Confederate States of America, affectionately called the "Daughter's flag," is the official flag of the UDC Salute "I salute the Confederate flag with affection, reverence, and undying remembrance" is the official salute of the UDC. When reciting it, a member stands and places her right hand over her heart. Hvmn "How Firm a Foundation," written in 1787 by The Reverend John Rippon of England, is the official hymn of the UDC.
