Clinton ~C. Burt, age 84, passed away
on Monday, March 16, 2009, at his ~ ~ ; '
home in Bryan, Texas. Visitation will , ~ be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17,
at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. ~ ~
Services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the funeral home with Mr. ~ ` ~ ` `
Brian Orchard officiating. Interment 'a
will follow at the Smetana Cemetery. ~ Mr. Burt was born on his parents' farm
(directly off Burt Lane), 5 miles west of
Bryan, on April 13, 1924. He attended
Smetana elementary school through the 6th grade, and then Lamar junior high and Stephen F. Austin
High School, graduating in May 1942.
At the age ~of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Aviation Cadet program in October 1942, and graduated as an officer and pilot
in November 1943. He was assigned to fly C-47's and arrived
in England in March 1944. Once there, he participated in D-Day and Operation Market Garden, completing five airborne
landing operations in Normandy and Holland, where he dropped
paratroopers, war materials and towed gliders to designated areas behind enemy lines. He also transported gasoline to the
front lines, flew evacuation flights to return wounded soldiers,
and at the end of the war he transported POWs out of Germany. In performing these. assignments, he logged approximately 30
combat and 500 operational hours. First Lieutenant Clinton Burt
was honored to be chosen and assigned to pilot one of the C-47's in the 98th Troop Carrier Squadron on its return to the United
States at the end of the War. .
He returned home and attended Texas A&M University,
majoring in Petroleum Engineering. In 1950, he married Hazel Kosarek, the first love of his life. After a year with Shell Oil,
he moved back to Bryan to be with his family and assumed the
day-to-day operations of his in-law's family dairy farm business. He sold the dairy in 1959 and worked as a master woodworking
craftsman for 25 years in the millwork division of R.B: Butler,
Inc. located in Bryan. His wife of 38 years, Hazel, passed away in 1988.
In 1989, he was blessed to have the opportunity to marry a long-
time fellow church member and family friend, Cheryl Otholt, who had recently lost her husband. Clinton and Cheryl enjoyed
20 years of loving companionship and marriage. Throughout his
life, he raised cattle and enjoyed working in his woodshop.
Mr. Burt was a member of the Church of God, an International Community, where he served as an elder. r
Survivors include his wife Cheryl; sons, Glenn Burt, of San
Antonio, Kelly Burt and his wife, Sharon, of Bryan; daughter, Vickie Spillers and her husband,, Mark, of College Station;
