ON SEPTEMBER I I, 200I, a day that is seared into the collective memory of
our nation, nineteen Al Quaeda terrorists hijacked commercial airplanes and used
those planes to attack the United States within its sovereign borders. Over 3>000
Americans were killed in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Rescue,
medical, military, and businesses from all over America responded to the emergency.
From the Brazos Valley, Texas Task Force 1 sent assistance in personnel and equipment
immediately. Since that day in the very late summer of 2001, we have been engaged in
a war without borders against AI Quaeda and those countries that support it. We have
lost thousands of lives, civilian and military, and spent hundreds of billions of dollars.
Our goal is to defeat the enemy, honor the sacrifices of those who are giving their lives
for our country, and to ensure that America never forgets. It is for these reasons that
the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial is proud to exhibit in its War on Terror Memorial
a sacred remnant of steel from the World Trade Towers in New York City given it by
Texas Task Force 1. Let us never forget what happened, and let us always remember
that America is a nation infinitely blessed by a loving and merciful God.
