Santa Teresa Catholic Church

Dear Parishioner:
Being a pastor of a Catholic parish is a privilege and a sacred responsibility. The pastor, according to the laws
of our church, is obliged to see to it that the work of God in its fullness is announced to those who live in the
parish; for this reason he is to see to it that the lay Christian faithful are instructed in the truths of the faith. He is
to foster works by which the spirit of the Gospel, including difficult issues such as social justice and fairness are
promoted within the community.
As we begin an intensive capital gifts fund raising program in our church, I want you to know that I am very
happy to be the pastor of this great parish. When I think about God's goodness to us in the past, I am filled with
gratitude. When I think about what God wants to do for us and through us, I am filled with anticipation. I am
grateful that we are entering a program that will open new doors of opportunity for our parish. With the success of
this program our church can build the new Parish Center.
This program has a great theme: EQUAL SACRIFICE .. NOT EQUAL GIFTS. This theme
challenges us to do the extraordinary; to give "over and above" sacrificially for the next 156 weeks. It reminds us
also that we can all have an equal part in God's work through the Unity of Hearts and Minds.
Beginning the fall of 1990 and ending in 1993, I ask that we unite our individual interest under the banner of the
Cross and beneath the special protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe in order TQ Build A Union of Hearts and Minds
for the benefit of our church and its people.
Please read the following pages of this booklet very cazefully and prayerfully in hope of seeing the opportunities
and responsibilities that face each of us. I earnestly believe that we, the people of Santa Teresa Catholic Church, are
ready for the challenge which this program offers. Let us each enter into this great effort prayerfully and
enthusiastically.
With God's grace let us commit ourselves to share in all the spiritual as well as the material levels of this
campaign in order that our parish needs aze met.
May God bless us and give us wisdom and courage.

Ser el pastor de una iglesia Catolica es un privilegio y una sagrada responsabilidad. El pastor de acuerdo con las
leyes de la iglesia, esta obligado a asegurarse que la palabra de Dios sea predicada a todos los fieles que son pane de la
parroquia, por esta raz6n el tiene que ver que los laicos fieles lean instruidos en la verdad de la fe. El esta'encargado
de fomentar los trabajos por los cuales el espiritu del Evangelio, incluyendo temas dificiles tales Como la justicia
social y la igualdad sean promovidos dentro de la comunidad.
Asi como comenzamos una intensa colecta de donaciones y a recaudar fondos quiero que ustedes sepan que yo
soy muy feliz siendo el pastor de esta gran iglesia. Cuando pienso acerca de la bondad de Dios hacia nosotros en el
pasado me Mena de gratitud. Cuando pienso en to que Dios quiere hater por nosotros y por medio de nosotros, me
Mena de expectation. Estoy agradecido que vamos a empezar un programa que abrird nuevas puertas a nuestra
parroquia. Con el exito de este programa, nuestra iglesia puede construir un nuevo centro parroquial.
Este programa liene un gran terra central: SACRIFICIOS IGUALES... PERO NO REGALOS IGUALES.
Este terra nos desafia a nosotros a realizar to extraordinario; dar "mks de to que sea posible" sacrificarnos por las
siguientes 156 semanas. Nos recuerda tambidn que todos podemos tener una pane en el trabajo de Dios por medio ~g
la union de corazones y mentes.
Empezando el otono de 1990 para concluir en 1993, yo les pido que unamos nuestros intereses individuates bajo
el estandarte de la Cruz y bajo la especial protecion de nuestra Senora de Guadulupe para poder format una union de
corazones y mentes pars el beneficio de nuestra iglesia y su gente.
Lea por favor las paginas siguientes de este librito muy cuidadosamente con la esperanza de ver las oportunidades
y las responsabilidades a las cuales nos vamos a enfrentar. Yo creo que la gente de la iglesia catolica de Santa Teresa
esta lista para el reto que este programa nos presenta. Enfrentemonos a este gran desafio con entusiasmo y en

Our History
1940 - 1990
50 years
Rev. Frank D. Urbanosky's "church on wheels"
The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them ever
claimed anything as his own, rather everything was held in common. Acts 4:32
In 1929, the Mexican/American community of believers of Bryan, Tx and surrounding azeas were of one heart
and one mind. The Reverend Frank D. Urbanosky, the first pastor of Santa Teresa, affectionately known to his
flock as "Padre Francisco" and "Padre Panchito" attended to their spiritual needs. In a trailer chapel, Espiritu Santo
Mission, a church on wheels, he traveled the surrounding areas proclaiming the good news and administering the
sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist and Matrimony. This community of believers grew and in
1934 Padre Panchito saw the need for a church. In 1939, he began organizing the community into a parish and
collecting for the building fund. In June 1940, he received orders from Bishop Rev. C.E. Byrne to build the church.
Three rear lots were donated by Oli Maztinsen, Albert Opersteny and Charles Opersteny. Mrs. Fred Wehrman
bought the corner lot on which the church stands for $100. Padre Panchito paid $200 for the other two lots.
Groundbreaking was held on July 21. Summer through fall with the labor of the faithful, Santa Teresa was built.
Dedication was held on November 1. The Bishop blessed the new church and administered confirmation to 138
children with people coming all the way from Houston, Tx.
Throughout the years the community of believers of Santa Teresa have constantly and lovingly labored to
improve their house of worship so that it could continually meet the ever growing spiritual needs of the
Mexican/American people. They planted trees, flowers, and raised money through different projects -all to give
greater glory to God, His Son Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior.
In March 1943, Fray Antonio Frontera, T.O.R. was appointed pastor, followed by Fray Jose Pocovi, T.O.R.
in Mazch 1947, Rev. William Buades in October 1949, Rev. Tom Frank in March 1978, Rev. Richard Tijerina in
July 1987, Rev. Everett Trebtoske in January 1988 and Rev. Victor Robles, S.J. in July 1988 and to the present
day is the spiritual leader of this great religious community of Santa Teresa. Rev. Victor Juan Alvazez served as
interim pastor July -September 1959, September -December 1966 and September -December 1972.
Since the dedication of the church in 1940, the community of believers had grown such that a remodeling
project was undertaken in 1954. A rectory was also built at that time. The pazishioners being of one heazt and one
mind had a vision of a larger sanctuary that would meet the needs of the rapidly growing Mexican/American
population. This goal was realized with the dedication of a new church in 1979 and an even greater goal was fulfilled
nine years later when the church was paid off in 1988. The mortgage papers were burned on February 14, 1988 at a
ceremony that gives testimony to the diligent sacrifices of the people of Santa Teresa.

La multitud de los creyentes tenian un solo coraz6n y una Bola alma, y nadien
llamaba propia cola alguna de cuantas poseian, sino que tenian en comun todas
las colas . Heehos de los Apostoles 4: 32
En 1929, la comunidad de creyentes de Mexico-Americanos de Bryan, Texas y los akededores eran de un corazon
y mente. El Reverendo Frank D. Urbanosky, fue el primer pastor de Santa Teresa a quien le decian de carino "Padre
Francisco" o "Padre Panchito" el cual era responsable de sus necesidades espirituales. En una capillita en un trailer,
llamada la Mision del Espiritu Santo, o la iglesia sobre ruedas, el viajaba por Bryan y los alrededores proclamando
las Buenas nuevas y administrando los sacramentos del Bautismo, la Confesion, la Comunion y el Matrimonio.
Esta comunidad de creyentes crecio y en 1934 el Padre Panchito vio la necesidad de establecer una iglesia. En 1939,
el empezo a organizaz a los Mexico-Americanos paza fonnaz una parroquia y recaudar fondos pars la construcion de la
misma. En junio de 1940, el Padre Panchito recibid la autorizacidn del Obispo Rev. C.E. Byrne para construir la
iglesia.
Los tres Totes de la pazte de atras fueron donados por Oli Martinsen, Albert Opersteny y Chazles Opersteny. La
Sra. Fred Wehrman comprd el Tote de la esquina en donde estd la iglesia por solo $100. El Padre Panchito pag6
$200 por los otros dos Totes. La ceremonia de edification de la primera piedra fue realizada e121 de Julio de 1940.
Desde el verano hasty el otono con la ayuda de los fieles la iglesia de Santa Teresa fue cons[ruida. La dedication fue
el 1 de noviembre de 1940. El Obispo bendijo la iglesia y confirmo a 138 Winos, vinieron personas desde Houston,
Texas paza celebraz el acontecimiento.
A travel de los anos la comunidad de creyentes de Santa Teresa han trabajado constante y fiehnente paza mejoraz
su casa de oration para que pudiera satisfacer continuamente las necesidades de la creciente comunidad Mexico-
Americana. Ellos plantazon ~rboles, flores, y recaudazon fondos mediante diversas actividades y todo esto pars servir
mejor a Dios, su hijo unico Jesucristo, Sen"or y Salvador.
En mazzo de 1943, el Fraile Antonio Frontera, T.O.R. fue nombrado pastor, seguido por el Fraile Jose Pocovi,
T.O.R. en septiembre 1947, el Rev. William Buades en octubre de 1949, el Rev. Tom Frank en mazzo de 1978, el
Rev. Richard Tijerina en Julio de 1987, el Rev. Everett Trebtoske en enero de 1988, y el Rev. Victor Robles, S.J.
en Julio de 1988 quien todavia funge como lider espiritual de esta gran comunidad religiosa de Santa Teresa. El Rev.
Victor Juan Qlvazez sirvio como pastor provicional de Julio a septiembre de 1959, de septiembre a diciembre de
1966, y de septiembre a diciembre de 1972.
Desde la dedication de la iglesia en 19401a comunidad de creyentes habia crecido de tal forma que un projecto de
remodelacidn fue realizado en 1954, el cual incluyd la conswci6n de la casa del padre. Los feligreses siendo de un
corazdn y mente tuvieron una visidn de un santuario mas grande el cual satisfaceria las necesidades de una creciente
comunidad Mexico-Americana. Esta meta fue realizada con la dedication de una iglesia en 1979 y una meta aun mas
grande fue lograda nueve anos mas tarde cuando la hipoteca de la iglesia fue pagada. La hipoteca de la iglesia fue
quemada en una ceremonia el 14 de febrero de 19881a cual da testimonio de los sacrificios realizados por la genre de
la iglesia de Santa Teresa.

The community of believers of Santa Teresa have avision - a Parish Center that will serve their many
ministries and spiritual needs and a new rectory that will serve the many needs of its priests. Maria Villareal has
generously donated the money for the construction of the rectory in memory of her husband, Martin Villareal. The
vision of the Parish Center will be realized. This community of believers have seen the tremendous need for this
building. Santa Teresa Church fulfills the first responsibility of any church -bringing the message of Christ to its
membership and to its community. The next responsibility is to spread that message in all the world; here at Santa
Teresa we try to accomplish this through our ministries. Our local ministries are numerous:

spreading that message throughout the world. Our present space is limited! And we have a vision. Through the
Union of Hearts and Minds campaign, we all will have a singular opportunity to express our love and commitment
to the Lord and His kingdom. Let us all open our hearts and minds and pray for its success.

La comunidad de creyentes de Santa Teresa tiene una vision esta es: la edificacidn de un Centro educational el
cual servird paza satisfacer las necesidades de sus diversas organizaciones parroquiales, las necesidades espirituales de
sus fieles, y la construcidn de la nueva casa paza el padre que satisfacera las muchas necesidades de su sacerdote. La
Sra. Maria Villareal ha donado generosamente el dinero para la construcion de la casa del padre. tY.a vision del edificio
educational va a ser realizada! La comunidad de feligreses ha visto la imperiosa necesidad de este edificio. La iglesia
de Santa Teresa satisface la principal responsabilidad de cualquier congregaci6n religiosa la cual es: traer el mensaje
de Cristo a sus miembros y su comunidad. La siguiente resposabilidad es de predicaz la palabra al mundo por eso

Project Summary:
The approximately 22,000 S.T. Parish Hall will house three different functions. First, the assembly area is
designed to seat 1,280 people in chairs for a stage production; or 1,067 people at tables; or 1,828 people for a
celebration/dance function. This space will have special lighting and sound system to support the activities. The
high ceilings will allow basketball and volleyball type activities to be enjoyed. Secondly, this building will provide
education space of various sizes for a total of 18 classrooms. Besides the identified classrooms, the assembly areas
provide additional space for larger group meetings. Third, this building will have a commercial kitchen with 3
stoves, 3 grills, 2 ovens, walk-in pantry, refrigerator and short cycle dishwasher to provide dining for 130 to 150
people through a steamtable serving line. The dining.area adjoins and arboretum area that will enhance and provide
additional seatng as required. The building will also hous ethe new church offices and toilet facilities to provide a
complete service for the ocmmunity. The Architecture is very much Hispanic/Roman Catholic in style which will
set the theme for future buildings in the development of the Santa Teresa Christian Campus.

From the "church on wheels" to its present location, the parishioners of Santa Teresa have always responded
to challenges. Today our challenge is to construct a Parish Center that will serve a very active and progressive
membership. Throughout the years we have met our financial commitments. Today we are being asked to rise and
meet the challenge of this expanding community with the construction of a building that will be multi-purpose.
Now is the time to go forth in a union of hearts and minds to make this challenge a REALITY!

Desde la iglesia sobre ruedas hasta su presente ubicacion los miembros de Santa Teresa han tenido que responder
a los retos. Hoy nuestro reto es construir un Centro parroquial que servira una sociedad muy activa y progresiva.
Mediante los anos nos hemos entregado pars lograr nuestros compromisos financieros. Hoy hemos sido llamados a
enfrentarnos a un reto de esta creciente comunidad con la conswcion de un edificio que sera de diversos usos. Ahora

Dear fellow parishioners,
As directors of this special program of growth at Santa Teresa we want to encourage you to pazticipate in a
faithful way. As we plan for growth in our church community we are not only planning on a new and larger
building, God is also leading use toward unity and fellowship with one another. Above all, we need a personal
relationship with our Lord to strengthen and guide us through this special effort. In this Unity of Hearts and Minds
campaign, we believe that our parish is going to experience a deep spiritual growth. The theme of this stewazdship

Como directores del proyecto especial del desarrollo de la iglesia de Santa Teresa, queremos animazlos a una fiel
participation en una Unidad de Corazones y Mentes. Con el desarrollo de la comunidad de Santa Teresa no solo
tenemos planes Para el proyecto de un Centro parroquial nuevo pero, Dios nuestro Sefior tambidn nos esta dirigiendo
hacia la unidad y el companerismo. Necesitamos sobre todo, una estrecha relation con nuestro Senor paza que nos

Since October 1949 when Fr. Guillermo Buades came to Bryan and undertook the great task of our new church
building, his enthusiasm and diligence inspired the parishioners to work hard in making this dream a reality. With
great love and respect, we the people of Santa Teresa, in his memory, dedicate this brochure to him.

Desde octubre de 1949 cuando el Rev. Guillermo Buades llego a Bryan, Texas y tomo la gran responsabilidad
de una nueva iglesia, su entusiasmo y diligencia inspird a todos los parroquianos para trabajar exaustivamente para
que este sueno fuera realidad. Con mucho amor y respeto, nosotros, la gente de Santa Teresa, le dedicamos este
folleto en su memoria.
