DESIGNATIONS OF COUSINS
Have you ever wondered exactly what relation you were
to your Mother's first cousin or to the child of your Mother's
first cousin? Recently answers were found in the American
Heritage Dictionary.
A "first cousin, "full cousin," or a ° german"
is a child of one's aunt or uncle. A more specific definition
is "a relative descended from a common ancestor, such as a grand-
father, by two or more steps in a diverging line." Then these
relatives are placed in two categories:
A - Those relatives descended the same number of steps.
B - Those relatives descended an unequal number of steps.
Examples of those descended the same number of steps:
(1) Children of brothers and sisters are "first
cousins" to each other.
(2) The children of first cousins are "second
cousins" to each other.
Examples of those descended an unequal number of steps:
(1) A child of one's first cousin is "first cousin
once removed."
(2) A grandchild of one's first cousin is "first
cousin twice removed.'';
These designations are not too complicated when once defined.
Complications arise when a "first cousin once removed" is some-
times called a "third cousin. How about using "kissing cousin"
for all cousins beyond first cousin category? After all, that
is a cousi.nly term.

One of our regular contributors, Bess GATLIN, sent this
item about this Journal in Special Collections. Special Collec-
tions is on the second floor of the Texas A &M Library and is
open Monday through Friday 8 :00 to 5 :00.
The Journal of Dr. Pleasant Williams KITTRELL
Langston James GORSE is a familiar name to most of us--
and if it is not, then it is our loss. Scion of several old
Texas families, Mr. GOREE has enriched the culture of Texas as
an author, publisher and entrepreneur in the writing of Texas
family history. Mr. GORSE founded the Family History Foundation
102
The Journal of Dr. Pleasant Williams KITTRELL (Continued)
and is a frequent user of Special Collections" materials. The
Family History Foundation donated a copy of its KITTRELL Journal
1 853 -1867 This worthy volume is the unedited, indexed version
of the personal journal of Dr. Pleasant Williams KITTRELL (1805-
1867) during his years in Texas. Donated in honor of Dean
Emeritus Fred J. BENSON, the current President of the Friends of
the Texas A &TAI University Library, the KITTRELL Journal is an
extremely valuable resource which provides not only intriguing
insights into the thoughts and experiences of a participant in
the era, but also access to hundreds of names via an exceptional
index. On a more mundane level, KITTRELL provided a Maryland
recipe for curing hams as well as several home remedies. But
most importantly, the KITTRELL Journal provides insight into
Pleasant Williams KITTRELL himself: the man, his interests, and
his life. One does not have to be related to Dr. KITTRELL to
appreciate his feelings as he expressed them at the outbreak of
the war between the states - -or, for that matter, his consterna-
tion at attempting to collect a bad debt. The KITTRELL Journal
is a human document which records an epoch in Texas and a man's
full life within it.
Dr. KITTRELL himself observed on 1 January 1862:
"On the succeeding pages, if Divine Province, and
the calamaties of war permit, I shall continue a
journal of my business matters with such comments
on men and things as accompanying circumstances
may suggest. All of which I design as a remem-
brance and book of reference for myself while I
live and my family when I am taken from them.
(Volume 1:244)
Dr. KITTRELL was eminently successful in his attempt to
record events which affected him and those around him. One can
not help but wonder if later generations have as much interest
and concern for posterity to devote the time necessary to keep
a journal. Our existence is richer because of the effort of
Dr. KITTRELL to record and comment on events in his life. And
Texas A &M University is grateful to the Family History Founda-
tion and Langston James GOREE for this valuable gift.

Head, Special Collections

BRAZOS COUNTY CEICTERIES
The listing of Wixon Cemetery by Don and Vicki SIMONS
is a great beginning for the other listings that we are
counting on from others in our community. Can the Association:
plan on a good strong effort through the next five or six
months to get the County listings ready for publication by fall?
Volume II, Number 1. page 4, has some suggestions for
preparing for listing. "Going-in teams seems to be the most .
efficient, as one can read and!the other record and there'is
a check on each other as to accuracy. Equipment needed: cards
(3x5 or the used computer cards are fine), record each stone
on a separate card, indicate spouse if shown; pencil and paper
for rubbings if needed (news print or butcher paper will do,
with marking pencil or crayola); chalk (for bringing out shallow
carvings; a wire brush or kitchen scrubber will get the moss
off. A thermos of water, insect spray and a big hat will also
help."
If everyone works together in a spirit of cooperation
and enthusiasm, we can accomplish this task and enjoy it.
How about it ??
Enumerated 1 February 1982 by Donald F. and Victoria SIMONS
Wixon Cemetery is located in Brazos County on FM Road 2776,
one half mile north of Highway 21 East.
