President CLARK's Greetings
Dear Friends, As we go into 1981 with renewed excitement for
genealogical research, please remember your Association. The
success of our organization this year depends upon each member
attending, contacting new friends and inviting (maybe bringing ?)
them to meetings, working on the charts and card files in the
Library, and generally supporting the programs of the organiza-
tion. Let's work together for a great genealogical 19811

KNOW WHERE r RESEARCH SOURCES
The HEART OF TEXAS RECORDS published by the Central
Texas Genealogical Society, Inc. (Waco) Volume XXIII, Winter 1980,
} Number 4, has an article that our members should be aware of.
This is one of the publications that we exchange with, so the
issue referred to is in the Bryan Library. The article is on pp.
117 - 120 and is titled County Maps, How tc Order From Thirteen
Southern States. The article gives the maps that are available,
cost, shipping information, and where to write to order them.
County maps are such fun when a specific county is
identified with a family. Even old communities that no longer
have a post office will be pinpointed on county maps, and all the
little rural cemeteries are shown. There are also all the little
streams and creeks with names that will help in identifying land
descriptions. The states listed are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
For those of you who are saying, 'Why wasn't my state
listed ?' Write to the highway department in the state capitol
of the state you need and ask for their order form or informa-
tion. These are available in states and are not expensive.

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ANNUAL REPORTS: A PRELIMINARY
FINDING GUIDE TO THE SERIAL SET
Each year the D.A.R. is required to submit their annual
report to the federal Congress. This report is published each year
as part of the Ga g ressi'onal-serial set The _Li.brary owns most,
if not all, of these reports as part of their collection of federal
documents. These reports are rather dull for the most part, but
they do contain in many cases records of newly discovered (or
marked) graves of Revolutionary soldiers. In addition, source
records are sometimes reprinted in the back of these reports. I've
included a few of the major instances of these records in the main
part of the bibliography, but it is possible that someone would
want to examine each volume. Unfortunately, these volumes are not
well indexed. Below is a p . Lelimin ary cross - reference from the year
of the D.A.R. report to the serial set number. (for the years 1897-

The February meeting will begin what should be a very
interesting feature. One person will present a puzzler -- something
in their research that they need help with. The Puzzle Presentation
will be five minutes long. At the end of the five minutes, time
will be called and the group will have ten minutes to brainstorm
some avenues of solution. Christine DULANEY has asked for the first
spot. Someone volunteer for the Parch meeting. Do you have a
puzzle you want help with ?? Now's your chancel!

WHO KN OW S ? QUERIES / VUESTIONS
` 028 BARNES, PRESLEY, HAINSWORTH, BRASHIER
77
Please help me find my great-grandfather Pleasant
BARNES (especially those of you who are searching
graveyards). His wife's maiden name was Sarah (Sallie)
P RESLEY
E'. (b Many, LA, 26 Mar 1840). She was married
first to Elisha HAINSWORTH or BARNES. Sallie came to
Texas ca 1870. Her daughter, Ruby Belle BARNES, was
born in or around Bryan on 19 December 1871. Sallie
remarried (James Thomas BRASHIER) in Bryan on 22 Jan
1879. BARNES was supposedly a Texas Ranger, although
the Rangers have no record of this.

METHODS /MATERIALS
Mike KERSTETTER, our member who has recently moved to
Kent, Washington, has written that he is looking forward to explor-
ing a Federal Archives Branch and a major L.D.S. Branch Library in
Seattle, which is about 20 minutes from his home. How about that!
He sent this bit of information for people with lines in Pennsyl-
vania (especially German ones).
Lutheran Church records (old ones for much of the state)
can be found at
Philip Schaff Library
Archives Dept.
Lancaster Theological Seminary
555 West James St.
Lancaster, PA 17605
Mike says they've been very helpful with very little to
work with--usually just surnames and approximate areas and/or dates.
Thanks for the tip, Mike.
ANYBODY ELSE HAVE A HELPFUL HINT??
