It will be worth the effort to see the new library, where
the materials of interest to genealogists may be housed now, and
spot those special items that you will want to go back to later.
Dorothy says that a student will be our guide. Come armed with
questions about where specific items of interest to you maybe
housed. Also, bring clip board or other note taking materials.

The document featured
in this edition is contrib-
uted by Euline BENBO''W. This
petition for establishment
of the county which became
Brazos County is prior to
the one published in Vol. I
No. 2 pp. 27 -31 which was
dated Nov. 25, 18! 1. 'We are
publishing this one also as
the names are of great in-
terest and are not entirely
duplicated. Maybe some of
them couldn't get across
the Brazos River to sign
one petition or the other!
Again, we are printing a
transcription of the text
of the document along with
the copy in the files. ' i'e
really appreciate Euline's
interest in Brazos County
History which has brought
to light the se interesting
documents.

This article, which will be continued in several issues of the

A History o Texas From Wilderness to Commonwealth by Louis J.

Worth, Texas, 1924, Vol. I, Appendix III, pp. 412 -426.
TH OLD THREE HUNDRED
The colonists settled under the terms of Austin's first con-
tract came to be known as "The Old Three Hundred ", because the
contract was for the introduction of 300 families. The actual
number of families introduced under it, however, was 297. Nine
families received two titles each. The table given below is an
adaptation of one compiled from the records of the General Land
Office at Austin, Texas, by Lester G. Bugbee, and published in the
Texas Historical Quarterly for October, 1897 (Volume I). It gives
the names of the colonists, the amount of land received by each,
the present county in which the land is located, and the date the
title was issued. A labor of land was about 177 acres, and a
sitio, or league, about 4,428 acres.

One of MsBEIL's purposes in teaching this class on women's
journals is to inspire other women to keep personal written accounts
of their life. Our Association has discussed the recording of
family ' stories', traditions, information, etc, Bob RTJIZ= told
us about a little book that might- outline way to record this in-•

The February meeting was a most interesting one. Mr. Jim
RRY from the University Studios, College Station, shared his
pictures and his expertise. Brazos Genealogical Association
appreciates very much the time and effort Mr. BERRY gave for this
excellent' program.
Dorothy CLARK reports that some Scouts were cleaning the
„Hinter Springs Cemetery Saturday march 8. They are to be commended.
Wish we knew their names;
Since our last Advertiser was published, two of our members
have lost their mothers. Allie Mae WHITLEY's mother, Irene 'NHITLEY,
died early in February. The Irene WHITLEY Memorial Fund was estab-
lished at the Bryan Library by the heritage societies that Allie
belonged.to and by the Brazos Genealogical Association. This fund
will be used to buy books for the genealogical section of the
library.
The latter part of February Mary HORN lost her mother, Maxine '
DOWLING. Mary had just had very serious surgery and was very limit-
ed in what she was able to do for her mother. Let's remember Mary
with our prayers. -a call or a card.
Perhaps this is a good opportunity to remind our members and
friends that a memorial gift to the genealogical section of our
Library is a very appropriate tribute for friends and relatives..
Some of the members of the Brazos Genealogical Association
will be attending the 1980 Houston Genealogical Seminar at the
Marriott- Brookhollow'Hotel in Houston. The subject is the Louisi-
ana Territory (1810) with emphasis on Louisiana (1812) Arkansas
(1836) Missouri (1821). The speakers will be Donald J. HEBERT
and Anton PERGALDI_ Will those fortunate enough to get there,
please bring back some tid-Abits to share with the rest of us??
There is an announcement of a June Institute that may be of
interest to our members. The Houston Genealogical Institute
June 1 -5, 1980 will be on AMERICAN TRAILS at A.stro- Village Hotel,
Hoaston, Texas, This is the Third Annual Institute on Genealogy
and Family History sponsored by the Committee for Advanced
Genealogical" Research. Before May 1, 1980, tuition will be
The week is described as a week for exploring sources, methods and
new ideas in American family history.
Information will be available with Nan ROSS, Reference
Librarian in the Bryan Public Library, You may also contact
