BULLOCK, the of - -a° pioneer Baptist pre.cher, Joel "Madison BULLOCK.
R.
To this union were bom, -R' i :cex' Cl fford, Oliver Milton, "Albert Emory,--
Mary Aline and John Sidney, Jr.
Sidney continued to farm and did so intermittently throughout
his long life, but he also tried his hand at several other occupations.
He worked for many years at the old Bryan Compress as cotton weigher
when cotton was 'King' in the Brazos Valley. He had a neighborhood
groceryat the 'Y' on College Avenue when it became Highway b. This, of
course, is now Texas Avenue. In 1912 he decided to try his hand at poli-
tics, running for the office; of Tax Assessor of Brazos County. (At that
time Tax Collector was a separate office.) He was elected to two terns
but apparently decided that was enough politicking for him and went back
to farming and weighing cotton. However', in 1937, he became Deputy Tax
Assessor-Collector and served Brazos County in this capacity until his
retirement in 1957®
Sidney was a man of strictest integrity. Holding to the beliefs
of his grandfather, Sampson ENGLISHH, throughout his life, he 'attended
to his own business, made atonest living, paid his debts, and voted
the Democratic ticket'. He was also a God-fearing man who served
faithfully in the Baptist Church. He was a charter member and deacon
of the College Avenue Baptist Church (now Central Baptist) and brought
up his children in this climate.

On succeeding pages the Advertiser is continuing the publication
of the cemetery listings which our members have faithfully been working
on for the last few years. This has been our major Sesquicentennial
project and the book will be ready by fall. There are still some of
the cemeteries that have not been submitted (or have not been done).
Come summer, your editor is going into 'high gear rounding up the last
few and getting this project completed. Hope you can join us!

Bill PAGE has some good news for us! He is working'on updating
PAGE's Pages. There's a copy of the revised draft at the Microtext Desk.
We need to say "Thank you" to Bill more often.
Bill has also sent a list of books that we may be very interested
in! A very large collection of 18th Century books published in England
have just been received on microfilm. He says, "Unfortunately, there
really isn't any subject access to these works, so using the collection
can be quite time-consuming unless a person is loo.King for specific books."
Below is a list of those he has identified and he says he will send us a
list of some others as soon as he has opportunity.

COMPUTER HELP FOR GENEALOGISTS Part One
Why Do Genealogists Want Computers?
by John C. Cosgriff Jr., MiL.$.
(This is the first in a series of columns designed to aid genealogists
in using home computers to make their work more fun and efficient.)
Why in the world should we spend several hundred or more dollars
on computer equipment if all we want to do is genealogy? The answer is
the same as that for most modern inventions--it makes our work easier,
and allows us to substitute creative work for drudgery.
Computers help us by storing large amounts of information in a
very small space. They allow us to make copies of information almost
instantly. They also allow us to share what we have with other research-
ers and family members.
Once information is typed into the computer it never has to be
typed again. It can be copied from diskette to diskette or printed on
paper, and both the diskettes and the printouts can be economically and
easily mailed to other researchers.
With a good computer and printer set-up, it is easy to create a
family newsletter, easy to update a mailing list, easy to arrange a list
of names and dates into alphabetical order. It is also possible to
arrange ancestors into family group sheets and pedigree charts.
Indexing is another time consuming activity which can be done
with ease on the computer. All too many newletters containing valuable
genealogical information never get indexed. If these newsletters were
produced on a computer, it would be relat-vely simple to produce annual
or five-year cummulative indexes for every name and place mentioned.
Finding a name or location in the midst of thousands of computer-
ized notes is also a simple task. In addition to all this, computers
are fun to use and not as difficult to learn as is commonly thought. In
fact, learning to use them can be almost as much fun as doing genealogi-
cal research by means of them.
(In the next column, we will consider what computer equipment to purchase)
John COSGRIFF, author of this column, co-author of Climb It Right-7a high
tech genealogical primer, is a librarian at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

Betsy ROSS probably did not design or make the first flag. The
story was started in 1870 by her grandson. The real credit belongs to
Congressman Francis HOPKINSON, who billed the goverment $200 in silver
or one quarter hogshead of wine for his work. The government turned him
down. For a long while, flagmaking was a prison industry. The Framing-
ham Women's reformatory in Massachusetts made flags from 1890 to 1970
and even grew its own silkworms in the early days. Congressmen sell or
give away the 80,000 flags they arrange to have flown over the Capitol
each year.
