A GENEALOGY JOURNEY
U
I _
i
/ r r
A Genealogist s dream is to
go to the ancestral county
and state and "walk the ground ". Last month your Editor "ran
away from home" and did just that..
I've been saying South
Carolina for several summers, but by George, l did it this
time! The trip was great; I learned a lot and found out how .
much more I have to learn! In the next few issues I plan to
share some of the information I've gleaned.
First, if you plan to "run away from home" like I did,
I want to answer some concerns that I had. Columbia is a love-
ly city with nice broad sureets and even in the down town area
traffic was not a major problem. The State Archives' address
is 1430 Senate Street. The side street is Bull and the en-
trance to the parking lot is on Bull. Parking is free for
Archives patrons (They give you a parking permit inside.).
The staff is very helpful and w answer questions,
help you find materials, and suggest other avenues when you
get stuck. The primary search source is the Combined Alpha
betioal Index. To quote their handout, it is "a computer
generated microfilm finding aid to many early and important
record series held by the South Carolina Department of Archives
and History. With this index the researcher can find listed
in alphabetical order in one place persons and places from all
the record series currently covered. All record series have
not been indexed in the same depth. Only the names of the prin-
cipal parties to a transaction have been included for land grants;
conveyances; the Accounts Audited for Revolutionary Service;
Court of Common Pleas Judgment Rolls; Summary Process Rolls;
and Renunciations of Dower; and the various series of petitions
to practice law. Geographic locations are included in the index
for land grants and for those conveyances dated earlier than
1765. On the other hand, all personal and place names appearing
on the document were included for plats, the Memorial Series
in the Records of the Auditor General, tax returns, and bills
of sale."
Check this microfilm for each surname you want - -be sure
to check variant spellings. Ask how to record the items you
want to see further - -like a Land Grant or Memorial or deed.'
Other search areas: a card file of military service /information;.
135
136
A Gene alogy Journey (Cont'd)
county records on microfilm; many books of tax lists, stub en-
tries, cemetery listings and census as well as histories and
biographies.
Of course, if you can't get to Columbia right away, you
may want to do some researching through the mail. Again I quote
the Archives handout: "In addition to using this index in the
Search Room, limited access is available by mail. Interested
persons may request a, cost estimate for the index entries under
a particular name or all entries for a given surname. A price
quotation for paper copies of relevant microfilm frames will
be sent. If after ordering and receiving the index entries, the
researcher desires copies of particular documents, he should
return the index page with the items desired marked. As the
index may list many references, researchers are requested to
limit their col, ying requests to twenty entries per request. The
index page wili be returned with a cost estimate for paper copies
of the documents themselves.
The address for the Archives is:
SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY
Post Office Box 11669, Capitol Station
Columbia, South Carolina 29211 -1669
In addition, they have this list of persons who have
indicated their willingness to make genealogical searches for a
fee. If you wish to engage the services of a person whose name
appears on the list, please correspond directly with that person
as this department can neither make the necessary arrangement
for obtaining his services nor be responsible for the searches
made by him. (Ed.Note: Be sure to include a SASE!`)

An on -going project of the Brazos Genealogical Association
has been the listing of Brazos County Cemeteries. This issue of
the Advertiser has the Tryon Cemetery and completes the Smetana
Cemetery - White. We have some that have not yet run in the Ad-
vertiser and some that have not yet been list d; however, we are
getting close to publishing our book. As ( Sesquicentennial
project, we will be "getting it together" his winter.
Another editorial comment`: Following are the beginning
® pages of Bryan City Cemetery Register -Book 4. This one is very
interesting as it gives age, place of birth and cause of death,
as well as date and location of burial. This will run in the
next few issues of the Advertiser. The Bryan City Cemetery
books will probably be another publication. Exciting things
are happening.

CHARLES DEMORSE
Pioneer Statesman and Father of Texas Journalism
In March of 1842 a young man started from Austin to a small
community in northeast Texas called Clarksville. He was accom-
panied by Red River District Judge Tom T. Mills, Senator Robert
Potter and House of Representative member Tom Smith. On the
way Potter was murdered by the "Rose gang. This did not keep
DeMorse from reaching his destination.
The Gateway to Texas named for James Clark struck DeMorse
as being "a little unattractive ". Maybe he expected more! But,
its history was unique. Had not the residents of this Red River
area west of the Great Bend encouraged Moses Austin to form
his colony to the south, the famous Austin's colony might have
been centered around Clarksville! However, this region was
claimed by both the Mexican and United States governments until
1838, making it, among other reasons, too controversial for the
placement of a colony.
The area was so long in history that its first communities were
in their last stages of existence! Jonesboro, once a bustling town,
was almost gone by 1842. A flood the next year would pull the cur-
tain of doom over its last remaining buidings and leave Clarksville
as the main center of commerce and settlement.
A newpaper emerged from DeMorse's efforts - - The Northern
Standard. This is the story of the paper and the editor. A reprint
of the 1943 book by Ernest Wallace. 275 pages. Libraries: you may
