Volume VIII Number 2
Spring 1987
Bryan - College Station
Texas
From a long list of dedicated doctors who served and contributed to
the history of this area, we have chosen three to mention in detail. All
pioneer doctors are remembered for their tireless endeavors to fulfill the
requirements of their particular profession. At that time in our history
the doctors went into the home when their services were needed, often spend-
ing hours and even remaining overnight, doing all that was possible to re-
store helth to the suffering.
Information was compiled from the following sources: Brazos County
Hisj M , material for publication submitted by Dr. 0. C. COOPER; Microfilm
of Bryan Daily Eagle Memorial and Bdographical HistoEj of McLennan Falls
Bell and Cozyell Counties of Texas Mazy McCULLOCH was kind enough to make
her copy of the publication available; The Soles and Barron Families of
Alabama and Texas by the late Mildred Dowling BARRON.
Dr. Willie Franklin ODOM
Dr. Willie Franklin MOM of Kurten was one of the last to practice out-
side the Bryan - College Station metropolitan. He was in Alabama, Sep-
tember 4, 1869, and received his degree in medicine and surgery from the
Medical College in Alabama, March 31, 1894, and came to Texas in 1900.
November 18th, 1903 he was married to Ella Lilly KURTEN. His first office
was in his home, and later in a general mercantile store which he owned.
In 1915 Dr. ODOM purchased a Model T. Ford, the first automobile in
Kerten. In learning to drive his new car, he had his hired man, known as
"Pig ", sit in the back seat with a rope tied to the emergency break. He
said to "Pig ", "If you see me heading for the ditch, pull on the rope just
as hard as you can."
Dr. ODOM died February 17th, 1928. His death was said to be caused
by an attack of appoplexy. He was survived by his widow, three daughters:
Misses Allice, Gussie and Oansy OWEN, and by two sons, Freddy and Henry
ODEM, all of Kurten. Services were held at the Baptist church in Kurten.
The Revs. R. E. DAY and J. J. PIPKIN of Bryan held the services. In charge
of the grave -side service was the Ceder Creek Lodge No. 300 A. F. and A. M.,
of which the deceased was a member. Lodge 129 A. F. and A. M. of Bryan
assisted.

Dr. Joseph Marion SOLES
It is believed Dr. SOLES came to Texas with his two children along with his
sisters and their families in 1869.
Dr. SOLES died September 30th, 1898 and is buried in the Old Bethel cemetery.
Dr.. Henry G.; ARNOLD
Dr. Henry G. ARNOLD was born in Maury county, 'Tennessee in 1837. His father
was the Rev. G. S. ARNOLD, a Methodist minister, and he and his family had moved to
Tennessee from Virginia.
Children of Dr. ARNOLD were Edwin Percy, Jasper H., George S., Joseph W.,
Robert M. and Harry L.

BIRTH RECORDS OF DR~ W.P. JONES 1BB7-1913
by' Nadine Young BILLINGSLEY
Dr. William Feguesse JONES was
born January 8, 186(} in Selma,
Alabama to Dr. Richard William
JONES AND Rebecca C. Peguese
JONES. After graduating from
Tulane in 1886 he moved to
Texas to practice medicine. On
October 30, 1887 he married Ar-
della Louise BISHOP of Walker
County, Texas.
Though he practiced briefly in
Walker County, he and his bride
soon established their
residence at Cottonwood in
Southwestern Madison County.
They remained there briefly and
soon relocated to Harvey in
Northeastern Brazos County. He
treated mostly Brazos County
residents but at times was sum-
moned to attend patients across
the Navasota River in Grimes
and Madison Counties. He cared
for blacks and whites alike
traveling by buggy when condi-
tions permitted but resorting
to horseback at night or for
difficult road conditions. He
died on February. 10v 1913 at
his home. He was survived by
his widow and the following
children. Dr. L.W. JONES,
Orstus JONES, Raymond JONES,
Chester JONES, Stamford JONES,
Also Misses Ardella JONES, and
Willie Grey.
Dr. Jones was a member of the
Free Will Baptist church and
the Woodmen of the World. He
was buried in the Brightlight
Cemetery.
He recorded the name of at
least one of the parents but in
most cases the journal does not
include the infant's name. He
also listed the date and the
time of the birth and noted
other circumstances about the
delivery.
The entries in the journal were
correlated with the County
Birth Index and with the
original entries in the County
Clerks office where the names
of some of the infants were re-
corded. In a few instances the
Journal and the first register
differ in spelling or date.
There are also some differences
between the first register and
the present indexes, due to
corrections, amendments, and in
some cases probably to copying
errors.
Many of the births listed in
JONES journal, particularly
before 1904~ are not recorded
at the Brazos County Clerks of-
fice.
Our thanks go to Mr. Chester A.
JOINES, (Dr. JONES" son) for
making-this journal available
and also to Mr. Paul SCOTT,of
the Texas A & M Archives for
calling our attention to this
important record of Brazos Val-
ley history, and to Mr. Frank
BORISKIE, County Clerk, and his
staff for their help. We are
especially glad to have theses
early births made available to
the public.
Jones maintained a journal of
all babies he delivered between
January 1887 and December 1912.

ADVERTISER PLANNING
Interesting and meaningful
issues of the ADVERTISER
require planning. Gathering ar-
ticles and information takes
time, thus the need for plan-
ning is essential. If a stock
of ideas and information to
work with can be developed, fu-
ture issues should fall into
place.
The editorial staff encourages
member participation in
developing and planning future
issues of the ADVERTISER. Mem-
bers with special interests are
invited to write articles,
send in clippings and ideas or
suggestions pertaining to our
area at or before the turn of
the century.
Please be thinking of subjects
you feel could be developed
into good items. Some sug-
gested topics might include the
following: Reunions, family,
church, school, or military.
Membership lists,Bible records,
early professional or social
organizations, congregations or
staffs of early institutions
such as schools or hospitals.
Legal, early practicing
lawyers, court house informa-
tion, such as probate in-
dexes,grand juries, etc. Educa-
tion, early county superinten-
dents, teachers, TAMU, school
census, or school histories.
The editorial staff would like
to receive items and ideas from
non members as well as members
but may not be able to include
every contribution because of
the limitation of space or the
difficulty and time required to
develop a subject. Preference,
With this season of more
favorable weather, let's renew
our efforts to find those lost
ancestors. Also, share rides
to libraries and our genealogi-
cal materials. I have recently
had success with Mortality
Schedules, queries using allied
lines, and with the LDS
Registry - -try these.
Thanks to those committees who
have been working on their
phase of our program. Special
thanks is due Joy BROWN, Don
Simons, Janice HUNT and her
husband, James HUNT, for their
computer work on our Brazos
County Cemetery records. If
you have a computer and can
help, please call Joy or me.
Let's not stop with recording
and publishing information from
our charting of Brazos County
cemetery. Let's go farther by
urging others to mark and
preserve markers for their
family graves. Also, to report
anyone damaging a cemetery
marker.
Our library collection for our
members is growing, little by
little. Thanks to Mary Hanna
for our most recent donation of
a big number of books she no
longer needs. Do you have
books you want to add?
I would like to commend our
Editorial Staff for a good jog.
If you have anything they might
use in the ADVERTISER, please
sally forth.

1867 YELLOW FEVER EPIDEMIC
A Yellow fever epidemic swept
the state of Texas in 1867.
The following articles listed a
number of people who died in
Brazos County and gives some
idea of what the epidemic was
like .for the people who lived
them.
"The post - master at Millican,
after closing the post- office,
addresses the following letter
to the Telegraph P.O. Mil-
lican, Texas, September 9th,
1867. P.M. Houston, Texas:
Sir: Yellow fever is. in our
midst - -four deaths have already
occurred and seven more cases
exist. The citizens are badly
frightened, and all who can,
have left; twill be useless to
send mail matter to this place
from this date, as no one will
be here to receive it. I have
my goods packed and am ready to
leave, will send you notice
upon my return. I am, very
respectfully, Char. W. GAR -
NINER, Acting P.M.; P.S.- -
Please inform citizen." Texas
Countryman 14 September 1867,
page 2.
"Over sixty -one have died of
yellow fever at Navasota. The
News Letter says: `Beneath
many of the houses there are
pools of stagnant water."
"The same paper says the stam-
pede from Millican, on account
of the fever, was immense; all
sorts of vehicles were pressed
into service, and men, women
and children, pots, pans and
skillets, dogs, beds and mat -
tresses, promiscuity mixed up,
evacuated the town in great
disorder. Tar was burning
before the doors, asfoetida
suspended beneath the noses of
those remaining behind." Gal-
veston Daily News 19 September
1867, page 3.
"A letter from Bryan City,
dated the 23d inst., says: "The
fever is very bad at Millican,
and very fatal. There have
been some 30 deaths in that
place in the last ten days, and
among the number I regret to
say are Mr. SHEPARD and Mr.
THOMPSON, of the firm of
Marchbank & Co., Mr. W.W. SIM-
MR
Moi
MONS, of Simmons and Smith, Dr.
HARDY, Maj. REYNOLDS, Hotel
Keeper, Geo.CLEMENTS, of the
Livery Stable, and Dr. YATES.
The senior Mr. HASWELL, of the
firm of Haswell & Son, also his
family and clerk are down, but
late accounts say they are
doing well. There are now not
enough left to bury the dead.
I am glad to say that Mr. Ed.
TERRELL, the efficient conduc-
tor of the T.C.R.R. has en-
tirely recovered."
"There is said to be one or two
cases in this city, but, if so
they are slight attacks. But
most of us think our escape is
only a question of time,. and
that we, too, will have to suf-
fer from the prevailing
scourge."
"Please mail our paper to this
place. The P.O. at Millican is
now discontinued. The
postmaster has fled to the
woods, and the telegraph
operator is dead." Galveston
Daily News 2 October 18671,
page 2.
"We much regret to learn of the
death of. James M. SHEPHERD,
and F.M. THOMPSON, Esgrs., of
the firm of Marchbank & Co.,
both of whom, we believe, died
of yellow fever, at Millican or
Bryan. Mr. SHEPHERD was
formerly a resident of Ellis
County where he had many
friends." Dallas Herald, 5 Oc-
tober 1867, page 2.
"Bryan, Oct. 6, 1867. Eds.
News: The fever is still bad at
Millican. The following are
some of the deaths of last
week: Dr. BAILEY and Dr. J.J.
ROBERTS, Mr. and Mrs. CAMPBELL,
Mrs. BRIDGE and her two
children, Mrs. and Miss Bettie
SIMMONS, James SWAINS, the
T.C.R.R. conductor."
"Miss Ella YATES and two Miss
SAWYERS died here. They con-
tracted the fever at Millican."
" No original cases here, and we
are greatly in hopes we will
escape. The town is nearly
deserted." Galveston Daily
News 11 October 1867, page 2.
"No cases of yellow fever have
occurred at Bryan since the 5th
of October. The following are
the deaths from fever previous
to that time: H.C. SWIFT, Ben
HUBERT, D. SANGER, J. SANGER,
Miss Ella YATES." Galveston
Daily News, 24 October 1867.
page 2.
"Fever at Millican- -The Bryan
News Letter of the 2d says:
The following additional names
of those who have died of the
fever at Millican, and not
heretofore published has been
handed us. The mortality in
proportion to the inhabitants
has been as great at that place
as anywhere the fever has
visited this season. The total
number of whites who have died
up to the 25th of October was
61, and of blacks 20."
"Mrs. CAREUON and son, Alex.
McKEIG, Miss JACKSON.
Claiborne HAVES, Michael
MONAGHAN." Galveston Daily
News 8 November 18679 page 2.
