Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse
WHEREAS,
the City of College Station, under the guidance of City Councilman Fred Brown, and in
cooperation with the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, initiated the
Straight Talk Hofline in 1988 for the purpose of providing 24 hour community information
and referrals; and
the City of College Station has provided the Straight Talk Hotline with financial, as well
public support, in an effort to provide 24 hour services to the residents ofthe Brazos Valley;
and
WHEREAS,
the City of College Station deemed it essential seven years ago to take a leadership role in
conjunction with BVCASA to provide prevention and intervention services in the areas of
alcoholism, drug addiction, suicide, gangs, domestic violence, H1V/AIDS, abuse, gambling
and teen crisis, thus enabling the Straight Talk Hotline to provide services to more than 7,805
citizens; and
WHEREAS,
the demonstrated vision, faith and dedication of the City of College Station allowed the Brazos
Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, with the assistance of more than 300
volunteers, to develop the Straight Talk Hotline into a state wide reco~ i:,ed program, which
received the "1995 Best of Texas" award from the Corporate Fund for Children in May 1995;
THEREFORE, I, Mary Alessandla, Volunteer Services Coordinator of the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol
and Substance Abuse, and acting on behalf of the Board of Directors, Executive Director and
volunteers, present the City of College Station this award of recognition for commitment and
active support to the Straight Talk Hotline, without whose help this service would not have
been possible.
