eslie Boykin, 40, of Livingston, director of the City of
Livingston Parks and Recreation Department, died
Tuesday, Nov. 11, in The Oaks of St. Joseph's in Bryan, following
a battle with cancer. Leslie's services were held at 2 p.m. Friday,
Nov. 14, 2003, at the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite, with
the Rev. Doug Holtzclaw officiating. Burial followed at Hurst Ranch
Cemetery in Star.
She was born April 15, 1963 in Denton, the daughter of Jackie
and Larry Boykin. She grew up in Dallas, New Jersey and
Pennsylvania and graduated from Conestoga High School in Berwin,
Pa. She was awarded a bachelor of science degree in Recreation,
Parks and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University in August
1996. She was the recipient of the Silver Chaparral Award from
the university. While pursuing her education, she was employed for
13 years with the City of College Station Parks and Recreation
Department, beginning her career in 1983 as parks crew leader,
light equipment operator and groundsworker. She worked her way
up through the department, serving as maintenance supervisor and
venue manager for the city's Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater and
Conference Center assistant supervisor. She was named Employee
of the Year in 1993 and received the City Manager's Award in
1990.
She began her work as the City of Livingston's first Parks and
Recreation Department director in June of 1997 and established
the framework, policies and procedures for the newly- created
department. Her responsibilities included four parks totaling almost
300 acres, library swimming pool, golf course, airport, an historical
homestead and cemetery and various municipal properties.
She implemented numerous new programs for youth and adults,
including the Summer Fun camp program and Christmas in the
Park, for which she helped build many of the displays; supervised
construction of a new softball complex, fishing pond and Trade Days
complex; coordinated with youth organizations to provide athletic
fields for softball, baseball, soccer and basketball; solicited volunteers
and funding from businesses and civic organizations for park
improvements and programs and also helped inform the public of
coming events through a weekly column in the Polk County
Enterprise and an annual calendar of events.
She was preceded in death by her father in April 1998.
Survivors include her mother, Jackie Boykin of Goldthwaite; her
brother, Keith Boykin, and niece Baylea of Philadelphia;
grandparents, H.W. and Huldah Boykin of Goldthwaite; special
friend, Linda Jacobs of Livingston and numerous aunts, uncles,
cousins and friends.
One of her goals was to see Livingston transformed into a winter
wonderland with millions of lights during the holiday season. For
this reason, a Lights for Leslie program has been established. In lieu
of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lights for Leslie
c/o Livingston Specialty Merchants Guild, P.O. Box 1805,
Livingston, Texas 77351, or to the American Cancer Society or
Boys and Girls Club of Polk County.

Our Father, as we come together, we pause to praise Thee for the
many material and spiritual blessings of past years.
We are humbly grateful for our Aggie heritage and the comradeship v
Strengthen this sense of our God -given love and friendship. May it
spread to men and women of all schools, nations, and races, and brin
people of the world into a new bond of friendship and peace.
Fill with Thy presence the circle of our friendship that is broken by
an absence in our roll. May we have a reverent appreciation for the
great examples and sacrifices given by Leslie whom we honor today.
Bless the inspiration of this occasion that we may be strong in body,
keen in mind, friendly in society, and religious at heart.
