Modified Register for John Gorzycki
First Generation
1. John Gorzycki was born in 1819 in Prussia, Poland. He died in 1911 in College Station, Texas and
was buried in College Station, Texas.
These are the different accOlmts about John Gorzycki, my great grandfather.
John had three children with his first wife in Poland. ( I do not have any information regarding John's first wife,
whether she died, he divorced her, whatever.) They had Pete and Katy and an infant who died early. Pete and
Katy lived in Bryan, TX. Pete disappeared early and nothing is known of him. Katy married Stanilus Matecki and
they had two children, Ida and IJ. Katy worked in Houston for the telephone company. When Stanilus died,
Katy moved to Marlin and married m Wilganowski. Katy murdered Wilganowski, then she was arrested, along
with her son, J.J., and sent to prison. After serving time and released from prison she moved to Houston to live
with her daughters. II disappeared and nothing is known ofhim. It is believed Katy was killed at a railroad
crossing in a buggy by a train.
John and JozefWosniak, a close family friend, left Poland for America in search of new opportunities described
in the letters from friends and relatives already in America. They entered America through the Port of New York.
For one year, John and Jozefworked sorting apples to earn enough money to move to Texas. They settled near
Bryan in an area now known as College Station. John then sent for his wife and children to join him.(Mary, his
wife, and their five children, Henry(my grandfather), Charles, Wtlliam, Michaeline and Maryana.
They came to America in 1881, docking in New York and settling in College Station. The Gorzycki's bought a
farm of over one hundred acres next to the developing Texas A & M College. Today, The University Towers and
part of Hensel Park is located where the Gorzycki farm once stood.
Both John and Mary lived to be past 90 years of age.
The Great Storm of 1900 that devastated Galveston also affected College Station. Grandpa Gorzycki is
remembered as saying, "It's going to be the end of the world."
John married Mary Mikolajaczak. Mary was born in 1840 in Prussia, Poland. She died in 1928 in
College Station, Texas and was buried in College Station, Texas.
They had the following children:

Second Generation
3. Mary Gorzycki (John) was born on 12 Jun 1863 in Poman, Poland. She died on 25 May 1937 in
Bremond, Texas and was buried in Bremond, Texas.
Maryana and JozefWomiak married 11 Nov 1883. Jozefbegan as a cotton farmer in Bryan. Until 1910, Jozef
farmed and worked as a part time blacksmith. They then moved to Bremond, the Largest Polish community in
Texas. Jozefs pride and joy was his fruit orchard. He was an expert at grafting and had some of his trees bearing
three different types of fruit at the same time.
Maryana and Jozefhad thirteen children, eight of which lived. They lived in Bremond until their deaths in 1937,
one month apart, Maryana 25 May and Josef 23 April.
Mary married JozefWozniak on 11 Nov 1883 in Bryan, Texas. Jozefwas born on 25 Jan 1862 in
Poman, Poland He died on 23 Apr 1937 in Bremond, Texas and was buried in Bremond, Texas.

4. Henry V. Gorzycki (John) was born on 10 Nov 1865 in Posen, Poland. He died in 1944 in Bryan,
Texas and was buried in Bryan, Texas.
Henry V. Gorzycki born November 10, 1865 in Posen(poman), Poland. Came to the USA at age sixteen and
settled in Bryan, Texas. Bought farmland adjacent to the Campus of Texas A&M College. Was a general farmer
growing cotton, corn, vegetables and fruits. Raised cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, etc. Married Violet Zulkowski
October 5, 1890. They had twelve children, four sons and eight daughters.
Research has revealed Henry was also known as Andreas, Andrew and Jacob Andrew according to PGST News
Special Edition featuring Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, Wmter 1992, Vol IX No.4, baptismal records for my
mother and the National Archives at Ft. Worth, TX. The Czech spelling is Ondrej Gozicki per "Pomatnik".
In 1898, he owned 207 acres offarmland and had 2 mules, 3 head of cattle, 3 hogs and a buggy worth $25.00.
according to Tax Rolls for Brazos County. The
homestead is now the site of an apartment complex known as "Walden Pond" and the pond was formerly the
farms tank for watering livestock.
I have found five different spellings of Grandpa's Surname: Gorzycki, Gozicki, Georzycki, Gorgyski, and
Gorzycka. Additional given names: Andrezy and Henry Victor.
Grandpa's Declaration of Intention to become an U.S. citizen reflects his name as Jacob Andrew, entered the U.S.

Descendants of John Gorzycki
at New York on June 17, 1881 on an unknown vessel. His original intent was posted Nov 1, 1886. According to
the 1920 US Census he entered the US in 1881 and was naturalized 1887. Though everyone seems to think he
landed at Galveston the declaration shows New York as Port of Entry. Note: While family legend may hand down
a Texas port of entry, immigration records will reflect an Eastern port.
Henry married Violet ZuJkowski on 5 Oct 1890 in Bryan, Texas. Violet was born on 22 May 1873 in
Torun, Poland. She died in 1947 in Bryan, Texas and was buried in Bryan, Texas.
Violet Zulkowski born May 22, 1873 in Torun, Poland. Came to the USA at age eleven and settled in Bryan,
Texas. Married Henry V. Gorzycki October 5, 1890. They had twelve children, four boys and eight girls.
She was also known as Valerie and Valeria.
Her Home Village/Province was Terun (Turon)/Poman per Naturalization records, Brazos County.
Have found the following spellings for Grandma's given and surnames: Violet, Valerie, Valeria, Valeria Victoria,
Valley and Waleryja, Zulkowski, Zulkowskia, Zulkoski and Zolkowska.
Add Verna and Veronica to the list.
Grandma's Declaration of Intention reflects she entered the US at New York on September 1, 1883 as Valeria
Zulkowski.
Violet helped breast-feed one of her nieces, Stella Paradowski, when Michalina, her mother, fell ill with typhoid
fever. This really family helping one another.

Calvary Cemetery.

Stella received her education at the Ursuline Convent in Galveston, TX. She became an
Ursuline nun and spent most of her life teaching in Galveston and San Antonio. She
distinguished herself as the only nun that drove a car. When she died, the other nuns" blamed
the car" as the reason she got cancer.
The old Ursuline Convent in San Antonio is now the Southwest School of Arts & Craft.
25 F x. Elizabeth Jane Gorzycki was born on 4 Dee 1910 in College Station, Texas. She
died on 29 Mar 1946 in Bryan, Texas and was buried in Bryan, Texas.
Elizabeth attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. She too became a teacher
and taught in Hungerford, El Campo and Temple. She also ended up working at the
Agricultural Experiment Station At A&M to be near her mother as her mother was getting old.
Elizabeth never married and was only 36 years old when she died.

She worked as a house-keeper for Dean Kyle at College Station.

Margaret Louise Gorzycki born February 8, 1901 in Bryan, Texas. Grew up and worked on her parents farm She
attended school through the eighth grade. She taught herself stenography and then went to work at Texas A & M
College. She helped finance the college education of her younger sisters. For Polish people, especially women, to
obtain a college education was rare in those days. She married my father November 23, 1930. She was a
housewife, Mother and helped my Dad nm the business. She died September 1, 1987.
Maggie married Herman Ferdinand Meyne "Daddo", son of Herman Bernard Julius Meyne and
Minna Therese Elizabeth Kothe, on 23 Nov 1930 in Bryan, Texas. Daddo was born on 26 Sep 1904
in Cologne, Germany. He died on 21 Dee 1953 in San Antonio, Texas and was buried 23 Dee1953 in
San Jose Burial Park.
Herman Ferdinand Meyne born September 26, 1904 in Cologne, Germany. He came to the USA January 21, 1925,
Port of Entry was Ellis Island, New York, New York. Arrived aboard the Westphalia passenger ship owned by
Hamburg-America Lines. Max Lochte, his cousin, met and took Herman to Fredericksburg, Texas where he
stayed until January 1926. He moved to San Antonio to work at the Ashby Floral Nursery and attend night school
at Main Avenue High School to learn English. He claimed the only English he was learning in Fredericksburg
were" cuss words". In July 1928 he went to work for the Department of Landscape Art at Texas A&M College
where he supervised the planting and landscaping of the Capitol grOlmds in Austin, Texas and the campus at A&
M November 23, 1930 he married Margaret Louise Gorzycki and they had three children, Elizabeth, Herman and
Allan. On May 12, 1931 he became a United States citizen. In 1936 he then became the head gardener of the
Howell Estates known as "Villa Maria". William Howell was his employer until he died in 1940. He then moved
to San Antonio to start his own business. He was very successful and had San Antonio "sewed up" according to
the old timers. He was a member of the Beethoven Maennerchor, San Antonio Junior Chamber of Commerce,
Lions International and the San Antonio Symphony Choral Group (Mastersingers). During World War IT he was
active in Civil Defense.He died December 21, 1953.
Daddo and Maggie had the following children:

Mary attended Texas University at Austin for two years and received her teaching certificate. This was all that
was required to teach in Texas at that time. She taught in Brenham, Chapel Hill and Bryan. She took classes at
Texas A & M summers. After marriage, she worked at the Agricultural Experiment Station at Texas A & M

Frances attended Our Lady of The Lake College in San Antonio where she received her teaching certificate. She
taught at Chapel Hill, Brenham and Bryan. She also went to summer school at A&M.
Frances married Joel Franklin Hembree. Joel was born on 19 Nov 1904. He died on 12 Nov 1990.

Louis went to A&M and earned his degree in Entomology and wound up working at the school.
Louis served in the U.S. Army during World War n. His duty station was in the Aleution Islands.
I remember him 1eIIing us he heard that B- 25 aircraft crash into the Empire Stale Building in New YOlk City.
Louis married Joanna Perrone. Joanna was born on 14 Jun 1924. She died on 6 Jan ] 994 in College
Station, Texas;

Herman Ferdinand Meyne born September 26, 1904 in Cologne, Germany. He came to the USA January 21, 1925,
Port of Entry was Ellis Island, New York, New York. Arrived aboard the Westphalia passenger ship owned by
Hamburg-America Lines. Max Lochte, his cousin, met and took Herman to Fredericksburg, Texas where he
stayed until January 1926. He moved to San Antonio to work at the Ashby Floral Nursery and attend night school
at Main Avenue High School to learn English. He claimed the only English he was learning in Fredericksburg
were" cuss words". In July 1928 he went to work for the Department of Landscape Art at Texas A&M College
where he supervised the planting and landscaping of the Capitol grounds in Austin, Texas and the campus at A&
M. November 23, 1930 he married Margaret Louise Gorzycki and they had three children, Elizabeth, Herman and
Allan. On May 12, 1931 he became a United States citizen. In 1936 he then became the head gardener of the
Howell Estates known as "Villa Maria". William Howell was his employer until he died in 1940. He then moved
to San Antonio to start his own business. He was very successful and had San Antonio" sewed up" according to
the old timers. He was a member of the Beethoven Maennerchor, San Antonio Junior Chamber of Commerce,
Lions International and the San Antonio Symphony Choral Group (Mastersingers). During World War II he was
active in Civil Defense.He died December 21, 1953.

I was born November 11, 1937 in Bryan, Texas. Lived on the Howell Estate known as "Villa Maria" which my
father was the head gardener. Villa Maria was formerly a convent run by the Ursuline Sisters.
Moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1941.
I'm a perfect example of the "Terrible Twos". For example, I swallowed a full bottle of aspirin and Mother had to
rush me to the emergency room to have my stomach pumped, rolling down stairs and playing with scotpions.
According to Mom, I was playing by the kitchen sink and let a scorpion crawl up my leg to the knee and I just
watched - again my Mom told me this story.
Went to William B. Travis Elementary School 1944-1950; Nathaniel Hawthorne Junior High School 1950-1953;
and George W. Brackenridge High School 1953-1956.
Got my first official job, other than working for my Dad, at 12 years of age with Kelly-Scherrer Flower Shop
working in the greenhouse.
Served in the United States Navy September 26, 1956 thru September 23, 1960. Went through boot camp in San
Diego, California; attended Naval Air Technical Training Centers in Norman, Oklahoma and Memphis, Tennessee.
Assigned to Fighter Squadron 193 (VF-193) at Moffett Field, California. Made two Far East cruises to West Pac
(Western Pacific) on board the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CV A-31). Highlights of my Navy tour
occurred on the second cruise when we visited Bombay, India and Singapore as part of President Eisenhower's"
People to People" program and crossed the Equator April 19, 1960. Navy tradition is when one crosses the
Equator he is initiated into the Ancient Order Of The Deep. Before initation, yom a Pollywog, afterwards yom a
Shellback. It's two days ofwackiness: the day before is the last chance for Pollywogs to get their revenge, then on "
the day" the Shellbacks get their revenge and what a revenge: crawling through garbage, beaten with shillalahs,

given haircuts with pinking shears, dumped into vats of green dye, etc. Special cases get to stand "ice berg
watches" in full foul weather gear or had their faces rubbed into the greased belly of the "Royal Baby". I attained
the rank of ADJ-3 (Aviation Machinists Mate-Turbo jet, Petty Officer third class). Spent the majority of my tour
as a Plane Captain, to you civilians, that's a crew chief
Returned to San Antonio and went to work at Kelly AFB, Texas as a Jet engine mechanic.
Married Sharon Bryan July 21, 1962, had two daughters, Joyce Elaine and Eileen Louise. Sharon and I divorced
February 1972.
Have three grand children: Abigail Grace, Megan Nicole and Joel Everett Manes.
Earned my Associates Degree in Mid-Management from San Antonio College in 1975.
Held a variety offull/part time jobs at USAA, EG &G, and Dee Howard Company.
Retired July 3, 1999 from Kelly AFB (Civil Service).
January 2000 I drew my first Social Security check.
Enjoying retirement and working to supply my family a genealogical record of their ancestry.
