Back in 1934 or 1935 my parents were attending summer school at A&M, so my younger brother
and I ran around the campus looking for something to do. As I remember it, the only place on
campus where there was cold drinking water was a fountain on the front porch of the YMCA
building. The concrete steps leading up to the porch were shaded by trees and remained fairly
cool until midday, so we hung out there quite a bit. Two other young boys who hung out at the
YMCA were Jim and Mason Cashion, whose father was the YMCA director. Somewhere along
the way Mason's name was changed to "Red." Incidentally, my mother~-and a lot of other
women-~tried to get their degrees from A&M, but were turned down. My mother earned all but
her last 30 credits at A&M. She then transferred to Sam Houston and got her degree there in
1937.
