HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/06/2023 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee Staff Present: Reena Gonzalez, Business Service Manager, Luis Perez, Special Event Specialist, Meaghan O’Rourke, Historical Archivist, Jon Michael Alaniz, Staff Assistant Board Present: Gerald Burgner, Louis Hodges, Sherry Frisk, Tre Watson, Tom Turbiville, Ben White, Lisa Mouton, Gary Halter, Jessica Williams Excused Absence: Tom Turbiville Council Members Present: Linda Harvell, Dennis Maloney Call meeting to order and consider absence requests. With a quorum present, the History Preservation Committee Board was called to order by Chair Gerald Burgner on Monday, March 6th, 2023. Tom Turbiville submitted a request for an excused absence. Louis Hodges motioned to approve the absence; Jessica Williams seconded the motion. All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously. Hear visitors. None. Agenda Items 3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from the previous meeting. The minutes were approved. All were in favor, and the vote passed unanimously. Cemetery Sherry Frisk and Lisa Mouton spent time at the Washington Chapel/Salem cemetery to become acquainted with the conditions of the tombstones and additional features of the cemetery. It was suggested that instead of the granite monument in memory of the those located in that section, a bench with pavers to commemorate the unmarked graves that were found in Washington Chapel/Salem. Installation of the Texas marker is expected to be placed at the end of May. Historical Marker Program The committee would like a comparison on price form the historical home marker with another vendor. Lou Hodges has been appointed to research eligible homes in College Station for a Historical Marker. Exploring History Lunch Series Tom Turbiville has been appointed to this role and will work on the next year of speakers for the lunch series. The calendar has been set for 2023 by William Wright. Tom will have that information transferred to him to help communicate with any speakers. The luncheon held in March will be moved to Lincoln Recreation Center. Project HOLD Report The report was provided to the committee from Meghan O’Rourke. Meghan is still working on transcribing the interview with former Mayor Karl Mooney. She is working on three grants that would help to purchase equipment to better archive the materials that city has in storage. McCullough Neighborhood Interviews Meghan O’Rourke is waiting to hear back from Barbara Moore, C. Johnson, and M. Beal to regarding the interviews of local members of the community. The goal would be to have these interviews completed by June 2023. 85th Birthday of City of College Station Jessica Williams suggested a Live Museum evening event to commemorate the 85th Birthday. Councilwoman Linda Harvell would like to see display cases at city hall as well. America’s 250 Sherry Frisk gave an update on the fundraising effort for this project. The groundbreaking is tentatively set for March 22nd at 11:30AM. 4.2 Presentation and discussion on a report from the Parks and Recreation Liaison. No update. 4.3 Presentation of historical items Lou Hodges showcased a Civil War Scrap book as well as a belt buckle from a Texas solider from 1862. Adjourn and Closing Ben White motioned to adjourn the Historic Committee Board Meeting. Jessica Williams seconded the motion, and all carried in a unanimous vote. The next HPC meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 3rd, 2023, at 4pm.
