HISTORY
Congregation Beth Shalom was founded in February of 1968 for the purpose of
providing the people of the community with an organization for Jewish religious observances
as well as educational, social and charitable purposes. Beth Shalom means "House of Peace"
in Hebrew.
In the past we attended services at the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, the College
Station Community Center and the Unitarian Fellowship. Religious school met at the B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundation and South Knoll School. We moved into our home at 101 North
Coultner in 1990.
Congregation Beth Shalom is one of over 800 Reform congregations that form the
Union of American Hebrew Congregations and that have established the Hebrew Union
College - Jewish Institute of Religion, a seminary , for the education and training of rabbis,
cantors, religious school educators and Jewish communal workers. We do not have a
permanent rabbi, a Jewish clergyman. Our services are led by congregation members and a
monthly visiting student rabbi.
Religious school meets each Sunday morning from September through May.
Students receive individual instruction in preparation for Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
Congregation Beth Shalom sponsors a Sisterhood, and a youth group for teenagers
(UNITY). Children from 3rd through 10th grade have the opportunity to attend Greene
Family Camp for Living Judaism in the summer. The camp is sponsored by the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations.
