College Station, TX Page 1 Staff Present: Reena Gonzalez, Business Service Manager, Luis Perez, Special Event Specialist, Andrea Lauer, Administrative Support Specialist Board Present: Gerald Burgner, Louis Hodges, Sherry Frisk, Tre Watson, Tom Turbiville, Ben White, Lisa Mouton, Jessica Williams Excused Absence: Gary Halter Council Members Present: Linda Harvell, 1. Call meeting to order and consider absence requests. With a quorum present, the History Preservation Committee Board was called to order by Chair Gerald Burgner on Monday, April 3, 2023. Gary Halter was not present. 2. Hear visitors. None. 3. Agenda Items 3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from the previous meeting. The minutes were approved. All were in favor, and the vote passed unanimously. A. Cemetery Sherry Frisk discussed the College Station Cemetery and the Rector Chapel that was within that location. She would like to connect with the Geophysics team at TAMU to possibly have a ground penetration study completed at the cemetery to learn more about the location of the chapel. Installation of the Texas marker is expected to be placed at the end of May. B. Historical Marker Program Lou Hodges contacted a church whose location will now meet the criteria of Historic Markers. Tre Watson suggested targeting businesses that have been in the city for more than 25 years. The committee mentioned Koppe Bridge, Wings & More and C&J Barbeque. The committee members will begin reaching out to these businesses to provide the information regarding the program. C. Exploring History Lunch Series Tom Turbiville had a cancellation for the month of July 2023 but was able to contact Tweed Scott to step into that role. Tom was able to get RC Slocum, J. Thorton, M. Johnson, to sit on a panel for the February 2024 lunch series and Alan Cannon will moderate for those panelist. D. Project HOLD Report No Update E. McCullough Neighborhood Interviews Historic Preservation Committee Board College Station, TX Page 2 Tre Watson spoke with Henry Lewis whose is interested in interviewing. F. 85th Birthday of City of College Station Jessica Williams and Tre Watson sent a project proposal for a city scavenger hunt starting 9/19-10/20 and a Live Museum evening event to commemorate the 85th Birthday on the actual birthday from 2pm-5:30pm. Councilwoman Linda Harvell would like to see displays setup in the display cases at city hall as well. G. America’s 250 Sherry Frisk said that the fundraising efforts are moving along. The groundbreaking occurred on March 22nd, and it was a wonderful turn out with lots of city council members from both Bryan and College Station. Around April or May J. Cody Construction will break ground. The project currently has $125k raised and the goal is $150k. Another fundraising effort is engraved pavers. They have 33 left to purchase and they range from $250-$500. 4.2 Presentation and discussion on a report from the Parks and Recreation Liaison. Reena Gonzalez sought out an additional quote for the historical markers. Watson Monument quoted $450 per marker which is about $51 difference compared to Timeworks. Councilwomen Harvell provided another contact of Texas Metal Casting out of Lufkin Texas for another quote. Reena discussed the capacity of the Exploring History Luncheon at possibly capping the group at 60 people and requesting registration regardless of whether a lunch is purchased. This would allow to adequate planning for the parks team to set up the room and order meals. 4.3 Presentation of historical items No update 4. Adjourn and Closing Sherry Frisk motioned to adjourn the Historic Committee Board Meeting. Tre Watson seconded the motion, and all carried in a unanimous vote.
