College Station, TX Page 1 Staff Present: Ana Romero, Recreation Manager; Crystal Garcia, Staff Assistant Board Present: Gerald Burgner, Louis Hodges, Sherry Frisk, Thomas Smith, William Wright, Marilyn Randall, Tre Watson, Marilyn Maddox, Shirley Dupriest Council Members Present: Linda Harvell 1. Call meeting to order and consider absence requests. With a quorum present, the History Preservation Committee Board was called to order at 4 PM by Chair Gerald Burgner on Monday, May 2, 2022. No absence requests were presented. 2. Hear visitors. None present. Zoom person present – Joseph Georges 2. Agenda Items 3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from the previous meeting. Upon a motion made by William Wright and a second by Sherry Frisk, the Historic Preservation Committee Board voted to approve the minutes from the previous month’s meeting. The motion carried unanimously. A. Cemetery Sherry Frisk had no major report on cemetery updates as she is fervently assisting and partaking in many other projects. She indicated we are still waiting on our marker and mentioned as a reminder to Ana Romero that at some point in the future once that marker is received, there will need to be a dedication scheduled and made. Sherry Frisk mentioned upcoming year is officially the 75th anniversary of College Station cemetery. Council Linda Harvell mentioned the carwash sign next to the cemetery with owner, Mark Ruffino, communicating with TX Dot as to when business would be allowed. She expressed her disappointment and found the news discouraging. B. Historical Marker Program No new applications were submitted to process. Shirley Dupriest mentioned that her marker fee had been paid and wanted an update on possible presentation date with open availability and no preference. It was noted that committee will reach out to Patricia Cleere about a confirmed date. Shirley Dupriest mentioned hearing of the Best of the Brazos voting with businesses that have been in place for 25 years. With a requirement of 20 years to have business markers, she mentioned getting with businesses to see if any College Station Historic Preservation Committee Board College Station, TX Page 2 locations would like to be recognized. Council Linda Harvell mentioned checking with senior citizen Hugh Lindsay, a local attorney. She indicated he has been in business for many numbers of years, and he might be a good candidate for the marker. Shirley Frisk mentioned attending the Wheelock School House dedication and expressed how fantastic it was. She attended with the intention of learning more about dedications. The dedication was not just a marker, but a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, which requires more difficulty to achieve. The building cannot be changed but only restored. B. Exploring History Lunch Series Marilyn Randall confirmed May’s Exploring Lunch speaker Tim Gregg stating he was scheduled to speak on the topic RELLIS campus on the set date of May 18th. Speakers confirmed through October. William Wright confirmed he is scheduled for October. Colton Koenig no longer the facility senior coordinator as his family moved to another state. Ana Romero stated Molly Gillis will be on site for the monthly lunches for assistance. D. McCullough Neighborhood Interviews No update currently. E. 250 Birthday Visitor Jane Cohen was not present. A model made by a student of Chair Gerald Burgner’s, was presented to the committee for the “Never Forgotten Garden Veterans Memorial fundraising event that will take place on Wednesday May 25th from 11-1PM at the American Pavilion. Sherry Frisk indicated the model will help with presentation for the project. Brick campaign taking place and the brochure is being updated as well. Estimates are also being updated as the project moves along. The monument will be 7ft tall once completed. Roy May, former honor guard sentinel member from class of 2015 will speak at the event. Shirley Frisk indicated she will be pushing to advertise quickly and hopefully with plans to have the memorial completed before 2026. F. 85th Birthday Council Linda Harvell met with city manager about having HPC hosting the 85th City Birthday. City manager seemed to be on board but still tentative with event and suggested something quick as time is limited. Linda Harvell suggested event be held at City Hall on or around October 23, 2023 outside at plaza. She stated that the committee would be responsible for extra exhibits being on display and even suggested using the ideas and findings from 75th celebration. Linda Harvell expressed needing help from committee members on planning event. Sherry Frisk expressed hopes to have city marker before that celebration. Council Linda also expressed communicating in the available spot open on the committee currently. She suggested others spread the word. G. American Mile Gerald Burgner will be getting with Ana Romero to discuss on writing letter. 3.2 Presentation and discussion on a report from the Parks and Recreation Director. Ana Romero requested confirmation of the Historic Preservation Committee assisting with the American Mile at Veterans Park. She also stated that shirts have been ordered but are on back order as of right now. Historic Preservation Committee Board College Station, TX Page 2 3.3 Presentation of historical items Marilyn Maddox brought relics and artifacts that she inherited from great great grandfather who served in the civil war from 1865-1866. Artifacts included a flask, bullet gun molds and such. 4. Adjourn and Closing William Wright motioned to adjourn the Historic Preservation Committee Board Meeting at 5 PM; Shirley Dupriest seconded the motion, all carried in a unanimous vote.
