HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/06/2014 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation CommitteeMINUTES OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE JANUARY 6th, 2014 STATE OF TEXAS § § COUNTY OF BRAZOS § Present: Committee: Linda Harvell (chair) Jerry Cooper Ann Hays Gary Ives Libby Vastano Louis Hodges Joel Mitchell, arrived approximately 4:18 p.m. City Staff: Sherry Mashburn, City Secretary Jared Donnelly, Historic Records Coordinator Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6th, 2014 at the Municipal Court, 300 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Introduce New Historic Records Coordinator, Jared Donnelly. Jared Donnelly introduced himself, and each committee member introduced themselves as well. 3. Hear Visitors Local resident Elizabeth Natsios visited the meeting. 4. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Committee excused the absence of Pat Cleere who provided notification prior to the meeting. Ken Rogers’ absence was unexcused. 5. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes. MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes. 6. Discussion of committee terms expiring in January 2014 – Linda Harvell, Jerry Cooper, Ann Hays, Lou Hodges, and Ken Rogers. The committee discussed the terms expiring January 2014. City Secretary Sherry Mashburn informed the HPC that 6 applicants had chosen the HPC as their first choice. 7. Committee Discussion – 2013 in review for the HPC. The Committee discussed what to do with the 75th exhibit materials. They also discussed the Historic Markers Program. Only one Historic Marker was awarded in 2013. The HPC would like to continue the program in 2014. There was some discussion of getting new markers made. The HPC also discussed the “This Place Matters” signs and agreed that the homeowners should keep the signs. 8. Presentation, possible action, and discussion regarding the 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series, including update regarding specific efforts to secure sponsors for 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series. The committee would like for last year’s sponsor list to be sent to them so that they can help secure sponsors for future Exploring History Lunches. 9.Presentation, possible action, and discussion regarding recommendations to the City Council for the 2014 HPC programs. The HPC discussed recommendations to the City for 2014. A website for the City’s history was discussed. MOTION: Upon a motion made by Jerry Cooper and seconded by Joel Mitchell, the Committee voted six (6) for and none (0) against, to recommend to Council that the left over funds from the 75th Anniversary go to the Historic Preservation Committee for historic website, historic markers, transcribing oral history interviews, ect. The motion carried unanimously. 10. Presentation and discussion of historical items presented by committee members, which may include historical books, pictures, artifacts, scrapbooks, or other memorabilia.  No action will be taken. Lou Hodges discussed the “I Like Ike” presidential campaign pin he brought. 11. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. No items were suggested. 12. Adjournment MOTION: The Committee moved to adjourn the meeting at 4:50 p.m. on Monday, January 6th, 2014.
